What is Narcissistic Personality Disorder?
Narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) which is related to one’s behavior and personality. In this, the person is known to be excessively obsessed with issues like self importance, power, etc. They are preoccupied with themselves only and are vain in nature. It affects about one percent of the total human population and is rare in its occurrence. The causes behind this condition are not known but there are various traits that help in recognizing a person with this condition. It is a psychological problem as it relates to the mind and the image that the patient carves for himself.
Symptoms and signs
There are certain signs and symptoms that help in easy diagnosis of NPD. There are certain traits that are commonly found in people with this condition. Extreme reaction towards criticism and humiliation, high feeling of self esteem and over confidence in themselves, need for constant and repeated praise and attention, disregard towards other’s feelings and not been sympathetic, etc. People with this disorder are often seen exaggerating about themselves, their talents and achievements. They cannot hear anything ill about themselves and are not bothered about someone else’s feelings and problems. These are general traits that are found in the person suffering from narcissistic personality disorder.
Diagnosis
There are seven common traits that are found in people with NPD. These traits help in correct diagnosis and treatment. The person is found with inability to listen to others and stick by their schedules and limits. Interpersonal relations are at the back of his head and he views them with practical indifference, sudden bouts of anger and hysterics are common in such people. Pride and ego are the most essential things and does not bend when it comes to them. Such a person will never accept his faults and mistakes.
Treatments
Narcissistic personality disorder comes under the psychological disorders. Therefore for this the medical treatments like pills, etc. is not very effective. Therapies and sessions under psychologist is the best solution. According to researchers there is no specific cause for them, but roots of NPD can be found in early, growing up years of the person. Proper training is given for anger management and depression. Relationship therapy and group treatments are other suggested forms of treatment. In NPD, the person’s ego and self centric attitude is tried to be modified. Acceptance of others feelings and accepting mistakes is also an important aspect of the whole treatment process.
