HI my name is Felix and I was born and raised here in the US. My parents came to the States in the early 1980s which would make me second-generation Mexican immigrant. My story is somewhat of a cliché as it involves a huge family and parents who have worked their fingers to the bone to give us the life they thought we deserve. They came over in order to ensure a brighter future for their children and I have to say that so far, they have done a great job. I cannot even begin to express my admiration for what they have done.
They have come from nothing and they started from the scratch here in Texas. I am their second child and my older brother joined them in the efforts to make a better future for the rest of, myself and my two younger sisters. A few years after my parents came over and a year before I will be born, my mom’s parents also came and this resulted in my parents taking care of a huge family here in the States. When I said that they have worked their fingers to the bones here, I was not kidding. My father has worked three jobs at one moment and never less than two. My mother also contributed to the family’s income, doing the best she can to bring more money into the house working manual jobs, mostly cleaning. Yeah, I told you it was a cliché.
I myself have always excelled in school. I have always been one of the best students in my classes and I could see that my parents were starting to get anxious as the time for me to enroll in college was closing in. They were well aware that I am capable of achieving a lot in college, but there was a huge problem of funding it all. College education is such a huge expense these days that not even families which are in much better situation than ours can afford to send kids to colleges, especially those which are worth the money spent.
I worked a bit during high school, doing my best to earn as much as possible for my education. My parents also stated saving money, but that is when the crisis hit and it hit our family quite hard. My father lost the job he held ever since he came to the US, the job that has been our primary income for years, no, decades. At the time it seemed that my dreams of going to college were going to stay just dreams.
Still, I did my best to stay informed and I visited all the colleges that I was thinking of enrolling if the situation had been a bit better. And then, out of the blue, someone mentioned that there are these Hispanic scholarship funds which were set up for cases just like mine, for kids of Hispanic origin who have great grades and who are bent on going to college but whose financial situation does not allow it.
I made sure I learned all about the different Hispanic scholarship funds and I found the perfect one. It was especially concerned with providing scholarships for Hispanic children who were looking to get into business schools and who had great GPAs. My GPA was always great and there was no problem there. Also, I had already been involved in a few societies and workgroups for Hispanic culture and society. On top of all that, our financial situation definitely was dire enough for me to get the scholarship.
And in the end, I did. I got one of the biggest scholarships that Hispanic scholarship funds can provide the potential students with and I was finally taking classes at the college which was my first choice. I am currently third year there and I am doing my best to do well and to make sure that the money they have given me is well spent. I am passing all my exams and the scholarship is still covering the most of my expenses. My youngest sister will soon finish high school and I have already inquired about the possibilities of her getting the same or some other scholarship from one of the Hispanic scholarship funds. The good news is that things are looking up for her as well.
Soon enough, thanks to these Hispanic scholarship funds, our family will have two college graduates who will definitely try and take care of the family in the best way we can. I know I will.
