Oliver Wallasch, conservationist Paul Watson’s attorney in Germany, on Tuesday confirmed that he had contacted Costa Rican attorney Federico Morales to prepare a defense strategy against charges leveled in Costa Rica.

Morales told the daily La Nación that he will present himself as Watson’s attorney before a local court to obtain access to case files, but he “preferred not to comment on any further details.”

A San José criminal court said its experts are translating an indictment and extradition request against Watson into English, French and German, to be sent to Germany within two months.

Watson faces a penalty of up to 15 years in prison. The statute of limitations on the case will expire in June 2013. Prosecutors filed charges in 2002 against the Canadian captain for allegedly endangering the lives of eight fishermen and for attempting to cause a shipwreck. Watson did not attend a trial on June 26, 2006, and the Costa Rican courts considered him a fugitive.

Article 251 of the Costa Rican Penal Code punishes “anyone who knowingly executes any act which endangers the safety of a boat or floating structure.”

Several local conservationist groups have asked Costa Rica’s government to drop the charges against Watson, but no official statement have been made.

Watson’s arrest is in response to an alleged violation of ships traffic in Costa Rica, which occurred during the filming of ‘Sharkwater’ in 2002,” Sea Shepherd said. The specific “violation of ships traffic” incident took place in Guatemalan waters, when Sea Shepherd encountered an illegal shark-finning operation run by a Costa Rican ship called the Varadero, it added in a statement.

Maria,maria,maria.....Remember we are dealing with a banana republic here! Chinchilla's gov't is as corrupt as Oscar Arias before...This is nothing more than a vendetta to get Paul Watson for embarrassing Costa Rica in front of the world...The mainland chinese and taiwan govtments has paid off Costa Rican officials to turn a blind eye..Comeon people wake up! Lets call a spade a spade !!!
Paul Watson is a hero!! A Human Being!! For having the will to stop a bloodthirsty wrong! People like maria lebron are too damn nieve to see law enforcement and politicians are paid for!! Sad...

Is this business with Paul Watson now being dragged up anything to do with FREE FOOTBALL STADIUMS as more and chinese business`s move in to costa rica and a larger chinese population, who will be a large consumer of shark fins, I don`t think it is the mighty dollar (15 Trillion in debt) I think it is the mighty Yuan, and they will eat anything that runs, flies, swims, or crawls.

Animals of costa rica hide in what`s left of the so called jungle.

Costa Rica is not what it says on label

Maria...our own governments refuse to "protect nature in a safe, responsible, and civic manner." This man is doing his best to protect nature...sometimes it may involve being unsafe, irresponsible (to big governments and big business) and uncivic manner...but at least he and his team of Sea Shepards are making the effort...it is embarrasing that a country that advertises "without artificial ingredients" cannot see past its own nose for the almighty dollar...cutting off shark fins to spite its face as it were...
Good point Terri. If Paul ends up in Costa Rica UCR is planning a walk out.
So you mean to tell me the statute of limitations on the case will expire in June 2013 but yet Paul Watson has been in and out of different countries all over the world for the last 9 1/2 years as a fugitive give me a break. The people of the world raise their voice in defense of our Captain and ask for these charges to be dropped immediately or the people involved and responsible will be called out and protested against like no other county has ever seen. I am just a huge fan of Mr. Paul Watson's but I have a lot of pull in the world when it comes to animal rights so there for the WHOLE WORLD WILL BE WATCHING. Now my Campaign will be focused on Costa Rica and making sure no one from my country dare visit your county again if this is not resolved soon.
egislative deputy Claudio Monge is calling for prosecutors to drop charges against Canadian environmentalist Paul Watson, who is accused of attacking a boat in April of 2002 in Guatemalan waters. Monge posted the comments on his Facebook profile, and called the arrest of Watson regrettable. He also called for Costa Rica to renew its efforts against shark finning.
Sometimes both parties are wrong. Maybe the fishermen were wrong. That is no excuse for Paul Watson to act belligerently, run into a smaller boat, fire water cannons at fishermen, put lives at risk, destroy property, disregard the laws and sovereignty of Costa Rica and to have his organization, the Sea Shepherd, defaming the country by publishing notices stating the government of Costa Rica is too corrupt to give him a fair trial.

If Paul Watson cannot protect nature in a safe, responsible and civic manner perhaps he should leave law enforcement to the professionals. Paul Watson is a fugitive whose dangerous and irresponsible exploits were captured on film. It is time he faces the consequences in a court of law.
