One of the most common problems found in people today is of back pain. Also known as dorsalgia, it originates from muscles, nerves, bones, or other structures of the back. The pain is usually divided into neck pain, upper back pain, lower pain and tailbone pain. It can be classifies as acute or chronic pain. The problem of backache is prevalent in people of all occupations and is even affecting people at young age. Various factors such as day to day habits, injuries, posture, etc. can be a cause for this problem. It can be a cause of serious medical ailments also and should not be ignored easily.
Causes:
Back pain can lead to serious damage also if not treated correctly. Understanding the cause of back ache is important for treatment purpose. The most common cause is muscle pain or strain. Muscle strains can be treated without any problem and reduces itself within few days. Herniated disk or rupture of disks can also cause pain. The most common cause for low back aches is damage to your intervertabral disk. Other cause can be the problem of aging, arthritis, pregnancy, your daily habits, posture, occupation, etc.
Treatments Available:
A number of treatments are available depending upon the severity of the problem. There is no simple or quick solution available for this, a proper treatment is required to eliminate the pain. If normal and basic treatments do not work then medical help should be taken. Depending on the problem, there are surgical as well as non surgical options available. Non-surgical treatments are the first step and include rest, exercise, medications, etc. They are useful in minor pain and injuries. Other alternatives are yoga, acupressure and ayurvedic treatments. In cases where the problem is chronic and no other treatment is working, then surgery is the answer. Surgery should be the last step and is advised only for major cases.
Preventive measures:
Common preventive measures suggested by experts are maintaining body weight, reduction in smoking, daily exercise, proper maintenance of body posture, etc. Obesity is considered to be a cause for back aches. Maintaining body mass helps in reliving excess stress on the back which is a cause for back pain. Daily exercising and yoga can also help in maintaining spine in the proper manner and back aches can be avoided. While sitting, proper posture should be maintained. Chairs with ample of back and arm rest should be used. A lot of changes in daily life can bring about a change in our health. Prevention as they say is always better than cure.
