Canker sores – symptoms and prevention
These are the most common type of ulcers found inside the mouth. They are very painful but are not cancerous. They can easily be recognized as painful, open sores inside the lips, cheeks, gums or can also occur under the tongue. It happens due to a break in the mucous membrane. They are considered to be one of the most occurring oral problems. Approximately ten percent of the population is affected by it and it is more common in women. They are not same as fever blisters or cold sores.
Different types of ulcers:
These ulcers are classified on the basis of their dimension or size. There are minor ulcers whose size is anywhere between 3-10mm. They are yellowish grayish in appearance and are the most common type of canker sore to appear. They are painful but heal within two weeks. Second type is called major ulcerations. They are same as minor ones; the only difference is in the size. They are bigger than 10 mm and are very painful. They may or may not leave a scar and take longer time to heal. They have a tendency to occur on tongue, cheeks or lips. The third and the most severe type are called herpetiform ulcerations. Occurrence of these is found more in women as compared to men. They are not very big in size but appear in clusters. They heal within a month and do not leave any scar. Appropriate medicine can be taken by the person depending upon the severity of pain.
Symptoms:
These ulcers are not bound by age. People of all age are at the risk of them. They usually appear on lining of cheeks, lips, tongue and upper side of mouth also.
One experiences irritation or tingling sensation at the place where they are about to appear. In few days’ time it swells up and will appear red and at last forms into open ulcer. Ulcer is usually white, yellow or grey in color. They often are very painful and are sensitive to touch. It becomes difficult to consume any solid or liquid food as it hurts a lot.
Preventive measures:
Normal changes in daily life can help in avoiding canker sores. Good and hygienic oral health is very important. Using effective mouthwash on daily basis, using proper toothbrush and tooth paste can help in relieving the pain as well as in avoiding them. Nutritional intake is another important factor. People who get recurrent ulcers usually have deficiency of zinc and vitamin B12. Daily diet should be good so that there is no deficiency of nutrients or vitamins.
Ulcers are not harmful but can certainly cause a lot of pain and discomfort. It is advisable to prevent them as much as possible.
