Mr. Graves serves Of Counsel in the Kansas City office of Scopelitis, Garvin, Light, Hanson & Feary, a national law firm with offices in 7 principal cities of the United States. He has practiced law for over 50 years. Since his 1961 admission to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission and the state and federal courts of Kansas, he spent 10 years representing business clients prior to becoming, in 1971, Chief Legal Officer, and subsequently, President, of a major publicly held Midwestern LTL motor carrier. Following the sale of that company to a transcontinental natural gas pipeline, American Natural Resources, Mr. Graves was elected to the board of ANR and returned to full-time private commercial law practice for the following 10 years.
In 1991, having served as a member of the board of a national truckload carrier headquartered in St. Joseph, Missouri, for five years, Mr. Graves was elected President of that firm. Upon its conversion to a large intermodal logistics management company, Mark VII, Inc. Mr. Graves became Vice-Chairman and Chief Legal Officer in 1994. The logistics company was acquired by Ocean Group Transportation of Great Britain in 2001. In June of 2001, Mr. Graves re-entered the private commercial practice of law, opening offices in the Kansas City metropolitan area, and becoming Of Counsel with Scopelitis, Garvin, Light and Hanson & Feary.
