Luanna Larusson and the Children

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that frightens us most. We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

About St. Michael's and All Angels...

St. Michael's and All Angels is where Luanna is currently volunteering.
It has a church, craft center, Abuse Prevention Program, daycare,
HIV/AIDS outreach program, pre-school and Junior Primary School.

The Junior Primary School has 42 students;
17 in grade one and 25 in grade R (reception - kindergarten).

School fees are R150 a month, approximately $30 Canadian.
Sponsoring a child to attend school costs $400.00 CDN per year
which includes a school uniform.

The students are taught in Xhosa and English, by two teachers.

St. Michael's is presently fundraising to build a six classroom school in Khayelitsha.
The project is to build a primary school to continue the children's education once
they leave pre-school nurseries. The Khayelitsha project also runs a counselling
and nutrition service for people with HIV/AIDS; Simamaleni - a ministry for
abused children in the area; an income generating sewing group
and a craft market providing local jobs and income.
