Building the Battle Pack – Part 5: Slot 1 cards revealed!
With this weekend’s Battle Pack:Epic Dawn Sealed Pack events at the Yu-Gi-Oh! Championship Series in Philadelphia, it’s finally time to unveil the contents of this highly anticipated set!
As we’ve explained before, each Battle Pack is engineered with 1 card each from 4 card pools. The fifth card – the Starfoil – can be from any of the 4 pools, making it a genuine wild card.
First up: the Rare cards! Rare cards in Battle Packs are your game-changers. The cards most likely to have a massive impact on your Duels. By putting them only appear in card slot 1, we are able to make sure that everyone in your Sealed Pack events will have about the same number of these cards (although Starfoil wild cards can still add a little bit of randomness – which makes it more unpredictable, and a lot more fun!).
SPOILER ALERT – IF YOU ARE WAITING FOR THE OFFICIAL RELEASE, AND WANT TO BE SURPRISED BY WHAT YOU GET IN YOUR PACKS WHEN THAT DAY COMES – READ NO FURTHER!!!
And here they are: the Rare cards, from card slot 1.
Witch of the Black Forest (legal again – even if it’s just for sealed pack)
Cyber Jar (ditto!)
Jinzo
Injection Fairy Lily
Dark Dust Spirit (re-usable mass destruction)
Skull Archfiend of Lightning (high ATK with protection from targeting effects)
Dark Magician of Chaos (VERY dangerous with the smaller spell/trap card pool typical in sealed pack play)
Blowback Dragon
Mobius the Frost Monarch
Fox Fire
Ancient Gear Golem
Treeborn Frog (re-usable defense or Tribute fodder)
Super Conductor Tyranno (with 3300 Attack Points, one of the biggest monsters in the set)
Gorz the Emissary of Darkness (widely considered during initial playtesting to be the single most dangerous and frightening card to face in sealed pack play)
Raiza the Storm Monarch
White Night Dragon
Deep Diver (get any monster you want from your Deck)
Caius the Shadow Monarch
Krebons (Krebons cannot be attacked, as long as your Life Points hold out – a great defense, or just a monster to keep around until you can Tribute or Xyz Summon)
Tragoedia
Obelisk the Tormentor (no comment required)
Machina Fortress
Tour Guide From the Underworld
Number 39: Utopia (see our discussion of the Extra Deck here)
Gachi Gachi Gantetsu
Grenosaurus
Number 17: Leviathan Dragon
Wind-Up Zenmaister
Tiras, Keeper of Genesis
Adreus, Keeper of Armageddon
Gem-Knight Pearl
Raigeki
Swords of Revealing Light
Pot of Greed
Harpie’s Feather Duster
Graceful Charity
Change of Heart
Heavy Storm (yep, they’re BOTH in here, but even then, the odds of you seeing Heavy Storm or Feather Duster in a sealed event are far from assured)
Snatch Steal
Premature Burial
Soul Exchange
Scapegoat (defense! defense!)
United We Stand (did somebody say Scapegoat…?)
Creature Swap
Burden of the Mighty
Pot of Duality
Solemn Judgment (is it worth the price when there are so few key cards in sealed pack strategy? you decide)
Mirror Force
Call of the Haunted
Ring of Destruction
Torrential Tribute
Metal Reflect Slime
Skill Drain (this card can really turn a sealed pack game upside-down)
Divine Wrath
Dark Bribe
Hopefully the gears in your brain are already turning. What kind of exciting Duels can you think of when only 220 cards are potentially in play? And you’ve seen 55 of them right here.
Depending on the deck size used for that tournament (20, 30, or 40 cards), sealed pack play can be more about deck construction, or more about in-game tactics and strategy. Try out all 3 variants for fun, and see which ones you like. My guess? You’ll probably like them all!
