As previously communicated we will update the entire 2011 Xperia portfolio* to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) as part of our next software upgrade. Our developers are now busy merging our current Xperia™ software with the new features in Android 4.0

With the holiday season around the corner, we’re happy to confirm that the first 2011 Xperia™ smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from end March/early April 2012. The first smartphones to get the upgrade are Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ neo V and Xperia™ ray. Soon after, starting from end April/early May, Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ will get their upgrades.

This will be a phased roll out over several weeks and all kits for a specific phone model will not get the upgrade at the same time. For more information about what’s going on during the process of an Android software upgrade, please check out this blog post  from our Developer World team. It gives a comprehensive overview of the steps we need to take to ensure great software qualityonce it reaches the phone in your hand. Below is a summary of the process:

  • It starts with public push when we as a manufacturer get access to the new Android release from Google
  • Our developers take the existing Xperia™ software and combine it with the new Android release
  • Once the coding is done we want to make sure the quality of the new software meets our, our partners and your expectations
  • Now we feel the new software is ready but we also need to make sure it’s approved by our external partners
  • All good. We’re all set to roll-out the new software. The story continues in your Xperia™ smartphone

As you can see, there are many steps involved and it’s a comprehensive upgrade in terms of number of products.

So, how do you know when the new software is available for your Xperia™ smartphone?

Owners of  2011 Xperia™ smartphone will receive a notification in the phone instructing them to download the software over the air via 3G or WiFi. Alternatively, they will have the option to connect to a computer and download it via PC companion.

Over the next months we will be keeping you up to date on progress and we will also share video demos of the new software running on 2011 Xperia™ smartphones.

* “2011 Xperia™ Portfolio” refers to the following products: Xperia™ arc and arc S, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo and neo V, Xperia™ mini and mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ ray as well as Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™

Xperia S then why we are not getting the same??

Do you know that there are xperia X10 mini and xperia mini/pro, and that those are two different phones? X10 is already old and so is the X10 mini. But xperia mini (not the X10 mini) is a quite new phone. That’s why it gets the update.

Im afraid to say that there are 3 reasons for this issue
      1. There have already been several updates ~+2.3
      2. You have got to realise how mid end phones like the WT19i ( Sony Ericsson Live ) have the SUPERChARgED Snapdragon 1 ghz Proscesser And u must under stand the lowest processer a android phone running 4.0 can have is 800mhz (advised) also this phone was annoounced in 2009 and made available mid august 2010… Please just understand how its not they choice not to update it. And if u gotta problem >.> complain to android …. cos they make it.(sony do add the bravia engine).
      3. Use your Knowledge guys. ;)

On the other hand.. i feel sorry for u guys so if u are a full on 100 percent want to have 4.0 for x10 use this link if u really want to as its a link containing the “rom”

why you people taking that much long time to release an upgrade OK no problem we can wait for that but the upgrade should have the following

    1. 3G native video call without 3rd party apps.
    2. Update kernel version to 3.0
    3. 5MP 16:9 resolution not 3MP & 2MP 16:9 resolution for Xperia™ neo V
    4. Mega bass Equalizer and manual Equalizer.
    5. Noise reduction in Video mode of camera
    6. New lock Screen
    7. Improved battery lifetime
    8. face unlock feature for xperia series which have front camera
    9. smart dialing
    10.CRT animation
11.The song change by press and hold volume up/down while it was locked
12.Better RAM management as we have 512 MB ram but it only shows near about 320 MB nearly
    13.Voice recording App
14.Two way call recording app (G502 has that feature in phone itself)
    15.file manager app
we are expecting those features in Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. so please don”t disappoint us and don”t make worth less of our waiting for upgrade

I know how to use the smartphone no need to tell. IF sony ericsson provide those features means it will stable.

If you don’t want no matter about that but many of the customers wants those features.

It takes forever!! and why Xperia Neo V is earlier than Neo?? It’s ridiculous.
But it’s ok as long as we will get these feature:

    – updated kernel to 3.0. why does sony still use old kernel 2.6? are they joking? Samsung’s has already moved to 3.0. Sony doesn’t make any senses to me.
    - smart dialing. why does sony never add this feature on xperia series?
    - face unlock feature for xperia series which have front camera
    - revamped themes. I still see gingerbread appearances on ICS Alpha version
    - status switch on notification bar
    - 3g native video call without 3rd party apps
    - improved battery lifetime
    - mega bass feature on music player as old walkman phone W series

it doesn’t matter to me whether sony will launch the Final ICS on Q1/2012, so long as we would get those features.

Thank Sony. I believe you can do it better than other brands.

Sony, please, please, please… make particular apps of your add-on software, user removable without having to root the phone. We buy your phones for the hardware and core functionality, not for the (in many cases) weak and ill-conceived bloatware that hogs the limited memory. You’d find your user base growing beyond your expectations, if you’d enable our ability to manage our own phones this way. Thanks for considering this request.

I bought my first Sony Ericsson phone, an unlocked Xperia Play, here in the UK encouraged by the news that Sony Ericsson will be updating the entire Xperia line up to Android 4.0. Even though I am a bit disappointed by knowing that the update will arrive in May 2012, I really look forward to it. The phone has great hardware and build quality and I am happy with it so far.

My suggestion to the Sony Ericsson developers/designers is to listen to user feedback as they prepare the ICS update. The key is not to unnecessarily disturb the elements that ICS brings with it but only enhance them. For instance, I am really disappointed by the theme/skin over Android 2.3.4. It makes it harder to see if I have checked or unchecked an option due to the use of silly colour scheme! Why change something that isn’t broke?

In the last couple of months, SE have really proved that they are listening to what Android fans really want and I think this is really common sense if they want to increase loyal customers. I hope that the ICS release will be a well thought out one, and it will win SE many loyal followers.

@ Martina, I know it’s not your fault, you only tell us whats going on and we appreciate that, but I don’t think its fair.

I feel that SE is disrespecting customers, once more

“2011 Xperia™ smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from end March/early April 2012. ”

in other words, Cutomers who bought their flagship Xperia Arc, or the other top of the line phones Xperia Play Xperia Neo won’t get the update first, how does that make sense? the Arc S, Neo V and Ray were released later on 2011, it’s not fair, its not right.

Xperia Arc S, Neo V, Ray will get it by the End of March Early April

the “REST” of the 2011 Xperia line up will get it LATE APRIL EARLY MAY?

Why is this a huge issue? yes we will get the update BUT, we can see the shift of focus to those 3 phones, so if there are bugs on the ICS update to the “REST” of the Xperias we will have to wait longer, thats an example/reason on why this is a huge problem

I’m glad that Xperia Ray is among the first phones in the range to get Ice Cream Sandwich, but I fully understand the anger of those who, having an Arc, a Play or a Neo, will have an update a month later.

I’m happy that the PLAY will be getting the update, but I’m worried that USA Verizon PLAY owners will get the shaft again. We haven’t even received the 3.3.4 update yet. We only recently got the 2.3.3 update. It’s only us too from what I have found from researching this issue. PLAY owners from other networks and or countries don’t seem to have the same problem. I’m hoping when the update is released that if USA Verizon customers can get it, we will also receive the updates that came with the 2.3.4 update since we haven’t received that one yet.

I, my father, my 4-5 friends and my younger brother are using Sony Ericsson from last 5 years and used W700i, P990i, W200, J230i, W810i, Z550i, W550 and so many. Each year i and my brother have changed SE high end mobiles. Just recently bought Xperia x10i and Xperia arc S. These are excellent phones.
But when i got news from some internet sources, i come to know that X10 is not going to get ICS (ice cream sandwich or Android 4.0). I am very upset that my X10 is not going to get ICS. Whereas others like samsung, htc are launching ICS for their old version phones. My friends are annoying me that SE phones are costlier than samsung and htc and SE overlooks after sales of phones. How this can be possible? X10 has less specification than samsung galaxy s2 and other. On the contrary, X10 is costlier than samsung galaxy high specification phones. If ICS will not be released for X10, i will never come back to SE.

Wanna know why Xperia X10 is not going to get ICS? I’ll tell you why:
            1) It’s too old. Samsung i9000 Galaxy S is not only more powerful than X10, it’s also more powerful than all 2011 Xperias (except Arc S) and it still won’t get ICS because it’s too old.
            2) It has only 384MB RAM and ICS requirement is 512MB RAM.
