Hands On: Edimax BR-6258n 150Mbps Wireless Broadband Nano Router

Wi-Fi Universal Repeater

In this role, the BR-6258n acts to extend the range of your existing Wi-Fi network.  To set up the “router” for use in this role, you will perform the exact same procedure as the Wi-Fi Adapter above with the exception of the setting the Wireless Setting to Universal Repeater as indicated below.

Once your have done this, simply repeat the remaining steps as for a Wi-Fi Adapter above.  Once completed, I took the netbook I have been using for this setup procedure, installed the Edimax Wi-Fi EW-7811Un adapter I used in this review, and placed the netbook at the same 50 foot distance in the aforementioned review.  I took the BR-6258n device and placed it approximately halfway between the netbook and my router.  My netbook adapter setting

and connection using my normal router.

The resulting WirelessMon Signal Strength reading and copy speed.

and obtained the resulting WirelessMon Signal Strength reading and copy speed.

While this was not exactly an earth shattering improvement, a speed increase factor of 5 was substantial.

Wi-Fi Access Point

The final configuration I checked out was the use of the BR-6258n as an Access Point.  When reset, this becomes the default Wi-Fi mode for this device.

The procedure is almost identical from that point as for the preceding configurations with the exception that when you set up the Wireless Security, it is for the Edimax adapter and can therefore be different than the default router Wi-Fi settings.

Of course, an Access Point requires a wired Ethernet connection, which is different than an Extender which acts performs a Wi-Fi to Wi-Fi function.

What is really nice about this configuration is for use on the road.  If you travel much, I am sure you have found Wi-Fi in a hotel more often than not quite worthless.  Since the Edimax BR-6258n is nano-sized, it can be easily placed in your luggage and connected to the Ethernet port in your hotel room to act as a “personal” Access Point.  The biggest challenge you may face would if you are an international traveler and need to use a wall socket to power up the device.

Hello. I’m from the heartland of the U.S. Lots of corn and beans, although Iowa is a lot more than just farmland. It also has a few computer enthusiasts (no, not me!). I’ve been around PCs since I got my 1st PC XT aloooong time ago. WGS is one of the first sites I found centered around WHS. And the best. Every once in awhile, I do get away from the KB and enjoy time with and my wife and our 4 kids. And I do have a day job.

YOU Sir have saved me hours and hours with this guide, to advertise that it does have this function and to not provide good instructions like you have is a negative while performance is a positive. Thankyou for this guide. Really

can this be used to connect a slingbox to a ’3′ MiFi dongle to connect the slingbox to the internet?

Great review!  I also have one of these little guys and use it as a travel router.  I primarily use it to connect to the hotel’s WiFi as a single client and extend my personal WLAN to all the devices in my hotel room.  this is particularly useful when the hotel charges a usage rate per connected device per day!

    Hi there,
I am trying to set up my Edimax BR6258n using the EZmax software. When I reach the password window I get a message saying ‘Please chexk out the connection’. It happens every time and I cannot set up my router? Is there a way around this and if there is I would appreciate a step-by-step guide as I am new to setting things like this up! Thank you for your help!

    Jim,

I found your review, and registered here, because of product research on this item.  I have a very specific question that I hope you can answer.

Can the wifi broadcast be turned off, and the WAN/LAN ports be used simultaneously, so that it in effect becomes a managed single port switch?

    Thanks,
    Karmana

(Why?  We need a tiny, pingable device to test a connection that is on a tower 40′ up, that fits in a 1′x1′ box – along with a modem, power adapters, cabling, etc…)

Hi there.  I think you’ve missed a great opportunity to extol on an incredible function of this little widget.  I have one of these and am an international traveller.  You said, ”
The biggest challenge you may face would if you are an international traveler and need to use a wall socket to power up the device.”
Here’s the thing:  You ACTUALLY DON’T NEED a wall socket to POWER UP the device.  The device comes with a USB-Micro USB cable that will power up the device WITHOUT the need to bring along the adapter.  My laptop’s always on my hotel table, but my iPhone / iPad is on the bed with me as reading material when I sleep.  I simply plug the USB-Micro USB into one of my spare ports in my laptop for power and voila.  This is why I bought this device and why I sing its praises.  Disclosure: I do not work for Edimax, nor am engaged directly or indirectly with the sale of its products.  My only interest is as a consumer of this product.
