About Mark

I am the Director of New Media at the United States Securities and Exchange Commission and am the the first-ever person to hold the role.

At the SEC, I developed a series of first-ever social media endeavors for the Commission and directs the our social media strategy and tactics. While there, we have launched multiple Twitter accounts, a YouTube channel, several Facebook pages, an iPhone application, an outbound email system as well as audience-specific Web micro sites. I am also involved heavily in the Commission’s public affairs and investor outreach activities.

Prior to the SEC, I was a senior vice president at Fleishman-Hillard in Washington, DC where I developed online public affairs, media, crisis, litigation and public relations programs for leading companies such as AT&T, Circuit City, EDS, Kroll Fraud Solutions and Revolution.com and helped shape issue debates through coalition creation and management, grassroots and issue-based Web campaigns.

Before my work at Fleishman, I served as a Vice President at APCO Online, where  I formulated and piloted high-level effective and measurable online public affairs, crisis communications and online and offline public relations programs for leading companies such CSX, Dow Corning, MCI/Worldcom, Microsoft, Norilsk Nickel, Pfizer and other and developed an online global, multilingual public affairs and consumer education program for another major  client .

In addition, I have served as an assistant professor at the University of Maryland University College and taught at Georgetown University from 2007 – 2009 where, at both universities, I designed and developed courses about using social media for public relations and public affairs.

I’m is also a blogger, guest columnist and podcaster, all on the practical use of social media.
