Daylen is a nine year old child diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. When Daylen first enrolled at the Seahorse Institute he had no form of communication. Daylen was a young man that presented with limited social skills, and did not engage in activities with his peers. Currently, Daylen has many forms of communication and is able to sign, vocalize, and provide pictures that express his wants and needs functionally. Daylen has since increased his social skills and peer interaction. Daylen engages in creative play, activities within the class, and also has begun to explore his environment. When Daylen begun the program one of the goals his mother expressed for him to accomplish was to say "MOM". Daylen has mastered this goal and verbally said "MOM" two months ago! While sign language is currently his primary form of communication, Daylen is also now able to vocalize "gum", "puzzle", "go", "cat", "kite", "push" and many other words.
Antonio is a four year old child diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Antonio has been enrolled at the Seahorse Institute for one year. When Antonio began the program a year ago, he was considered to be non-verbal with no functional verbal language present, and no expressive vocabulary. He was unable to complete simple one to two step directions independently, or able to sit at a table and attend to and complete a task without assistance. After a year of enrollment and intensive therapy with the Seahorse Institute, Antonio is now a verbal child with functional communication and an expressive vocabulary of over 350 words. Antonio loves to spell and decode words; he enjoys writing activities and is working on independently mastering writing all letters of the alphabet. Antonio is now also able to complete simple one to three step directives, and can sit and successfully complete an entire task without redirection or assistance.
Sarah is an eight year old child diagnosed with Landau Kleffner syndrome. Over the past year, Sarah's language has significantly increased. Sarah began the program unable to identify common objects, with limited vocabulary, and deficits in her ability to express her wants and needs. Sarah is now able to identify common objects around her, recognize and inquire about items she is unaware of, and she has increased her ability to express her wants and needs and request items. Prior to beginning the program at Seahorse Institute, Sarah demonstrated difficulty understanding and answering Yes and No questions. Sarah is now able to appropriately answer yes/no questions and has increased her ability to retain and produce functional information. Sarah now loves to sing and can easily sing along with most Bahamian songs, and any tune she has heard just once!
