“Wellman is a jazz vocalist whose crisp, clear tenor voice produces melodic interpretations that echo the likes of Harry Connick Jr., Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Michael Buble.”
~ The Des Moines Register
Max Wellman burst on the jazz scene with the 2006 release of ‘Gimme the Keys,’ an EP comprised of five covers including ‘You Don’t Know Me.’ Since then he’s becoming better known all the time. With a voice that evokes jazz legends Wellman has become a mainstay on the local jazz scene as front man for assorted combos.
His growing resume is highlighted by the chance to open for Grammy nominee Vanessa Carlton. He has also shared a stage with international opera star Simon Estes. In July of 2010 he headlined his first show at Hoyt Sherman Place in Des Moines with his big band and sold out the landmark venue. He has also been a featured performer at events ranging from the renowned Des Moines Art Festival to the city’s popular Jazz in July series.
In 2009 Wellman released his second CD, ‘Comes Love,’ a full-length production that included four of his own original tunes and followed that up in the fall of 2010 with a live recording of his rousing big band show at Hoyt Sherman Place.
Max is based now in Indianapolis where he studies music of all sorts in the Jordan College of Fine Arts at Butler University, one of the oldest conservatories in the United States.
