Chronic pain, and how to deal with it

There are many different factors, circumstances and pre-existing conditions that can all attribute to the development of a chronic pain. These include various diseases, traumatic injuries and acute and chronic medical conditions such are arthritis and migraines. In the past, before medical science has made some of the amazing discoveries most of us take for granted, chronic pain was just something that most people affected by it had to accept as a fact of life. However, in the last several years, pharmacology and medicine have enabled us to live reasonably pain free, and even the most severely painful conditions can be managed through pain management therapy.

How is Chronic Pain defined?

Most medical professionals agree about the definition of chronic pain – it’s a “frequently occurring sensation of mild, moderate or severe pain that does not respond well to common over the counter pain management treatments”, to quote one specific medical source. Another way to define chronic pain is to look at the frequency and time span over which the pain occurs. If pain occurs more than twice per week over a period longer than two months, it can be considered chronic, and it’s generally recommended that the pain is treated as soon as possible. Failure to address the medical problem in timely manner can result in a lifetime chronic pain condition, so it’s no wonder that most doctors are quick to prescribe painkillers like Fioricet to the patients whose symptoms fit this definition.

What are the main causes of Chronic Pain?

Many different medical and environmental factors can result in a development of a chronic pain condition. Some cannot be avoided, while others are really triggered by injuries or poor life choices. The most common ones include:

- Not properly healed injuries,

- Nerve damage,

- Arthritis and other types of progressive and degenerative bone and joint conditions,

- Ulcers,

- Poor posture,

- Migraines.

What are the best ways to treat Chronic Pain?

Current approaches to the treatment of pain include the use of over the counter pain medications (Aspirin, Ipobrufen, Paracetamol) or prescription based drugs (Fioricet, Carisoprodol, Tramadol). In some cases, it’s also recommended that patients undergo physical therapy and make certain adjustments in their lifestyle. Alternative ways to treat chronic pain include meditation, special diets and acupuncture, but the effectiveness of these alternative approaches is often disputed. Through over the counter medications are commonly used on day to day bases, and can even be moderately effective when it comes to the treatment of chronic pain conditions, stronger, prescription based drugs are much more effective. When considering prescription based pain medication, it’s important that you always consult your doctor before taking any further steps. This still doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be aware of your options, and some of the most effective prescription pain killers include Fioricet (Butalbital), Soma (Carisoprodol), Ultram (Tramadol) and Celebrex.

Whatever your choice may be, keep in mind that chronic pain is not something you should have to deal with, especially in this day and age.
