Working from home may be practically everyone’s dream, but it can turn into a nightmare if you are not well organized and aware of all the pros and cons of home working. Sure, there are a lot more pros than cons, like being able to get up from bed when you want to, working in the bed, not having to get all dressed up each and every day, not being around people you don’t know or don’t like, and having your own schedule. But there are some things you have to watch out for if you want working from home to really function well, and not to make the mistakes that many people make.
The first thing is, you are not in an office. Now although this may seem like a good thing, and it generally is, it means that there are more distractions around you, and it is harder for you to concentrate on your job. The ideal thing is to have a room in your house that is turned into a working room or study, but if you do not have that capability, try to accommodate at least one corner of your home as your working space, where you have everything you need at disposal, and a working environment.
Secondly, when working at home, it is very hard to ignore the things that go on around you. After all, it is your home, so everything that happens in it is your concern – a leaking kitchen sink, the mailman, telephone calls or noisy neighbor are all unpleasant distractions. Furthermore, don’t expect you can do your job while cooking lunch for the family, or while taking care of your children. If you are in that kind of situation, the best thing you can do is to hire an assistant to help you with such whores, and give your children the extra attention they need.
The third thing you should beware of is working hours. When you are working in an office, the working hours are determined and you can plan out your tasks according to them. But when working from home, is up to you alone to make a schedule for yourself. Be extremely careful not to leave unfinished tasks for later or the next day if you are not forced to, because you will end up having to do a great amount of work in a small amount of time, which is very stressful. You may also be hard struck to motivate yourself, as there is no boss to hover above your head and push you when you need it.
The most important thing is to make a schedule for each working day and stick to it. You can maybe work in split shifts, one in the morning, and then again in the afternoon. Just respect the schedule that you make, stay organized, and you can really live the dream – having a successful career by working from home, and being a great family woman or socially active person.
