Directive Concerning “Brainwashing the Japanese” issued by Brigadier General Ken R. Dyke at the 4th meeting of the Far Eastern Commission (March 20, 1946)
The General Headquarters of the Allied Powers (GHQ), in seeking to guide the outcome of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (Tokyo Tribunal), used the “Box of Truth” radio program (produced by the GHQ) broadcast on NHK radio for the purpose of brainwashing the Japanese people under the postwar occupation into adopting a masochistic view of their own history. With regard to the events that took place in Nanjing, the following information was broadcast on this program:
“Our military (the former Japanese military) concentrated its assault on Nanjing Castle walls on December 7, 1937 (when it actually took place from around midday of December 10 and afterwards). The Japanese forces, which had earlier met with fierce resistance from the Chinese forces from Shanghai, a week later exploded that hatred all at once, rushing into Nanjing City like a raging torrent. This Nanjing Massacre was a ghastly event the likes of which have rarely been seen in modern history, with some 20000 women and children slaughtered.” (Breaking the Spell of “The Box of Truth”; published by Shogakukan Bunko)
One week after the date of December 7 mentioned in this text was obviously December 14. In an article in The Times of London on December 18, it is reported: “On Tuesday [December 14] – The streets were littered with bodies, ・・・, but it is a fact that the bodies of no women were seen.” By producing a script for “Box of Truth” with claims that “20000 women and children were slaughtered” on this same day, the GHQ can be said to have effectively fabricated history. In this connection, the Asahi Shimbun was the only Japanese-language newspaper company involved in the editing of the “Box of Truth” radio program designed to brainwash the Japanese. NHk, which was under the control of the GHQ Civil Information and Education section (CIE), translated and broadcast the contents of “Box of Truth”.
Important here is the fact that subsequent to the political propaganda address delivered by Chinese Delegates Gu Weijun at the Council of the League of Nations in February 1938, to the effect that a “massacre of 20000 persons” had occurred, no official questions were raised by the Chinese side with regard to the “massacre of 20000 persons” at Nanjing or similar matters. One exception, however, was the Kuomintang-related propagandistic book What War Means (The Japanese Terror in China) authored by Harold John Timperley and certain press reports.
This was only raised again as an issue by an international body (GHQ) some nine years after the speech made by Delegate Gu at the Council of the League of Nations, within the text of the script of the GHQ-produced “Box of Truth” radio program.

“Box of Truth” radio program produced by the GHQ to brainwash the Japanese people (script)
This is a script written for Shinsobako, a program that NHK radio produced under GHQ to brainwash the occupied Japanese into self-condemnation. The script about the Nanjing incident says “Nanjing Before Its Fall”, and the text states that the Japanese forces perpetrated the massacre. At that time, however, the Japanese forces had not entered the walled region. Whether GHQ was in a hurry to produce this item we do not know, but the important point here is that the title says, “Before Its Fall”.
You would all know that the Japanese forces were not in the walled region before the fall, and Nanjing fell on December 13. The script produced by GHQ clearly indicates that the acts of lootings that went on from December 7 as indicated in the script were conducted by the Kuomintang forces.
The script also says that it was a brutal one, rarely seen in modern times, in which 20000 women and children were brutally killed and that it happened a week after December 7 – in other words, on the 14th.
This is an article from the London Times dated December 18, 1937.
It says, “The streets were littered with bodies, including those of harmless old men, but it is a fact that no bodies of women were seen”. If you read it, you will find that this is about the 14th. The Shinsobako script and the London Times article both tell of Nanjing on December 14.
It is obvious which version was made up.
