To Southland Boys' High School
Hello. Our name is Kousuke Seki, Ryota Maekawa, keita Tsukagosi, Teruaki Hiraga.
We are the member of Earth Science Club in Kumagaya High School.
We would like to study about astronomy now.So we would like to propose the theme of the study, "to measure the distance from the earth to the moon" in cooperation with you.
We would like to take pictures of the moon and stars around it, on the night of the total eclipse of the moon, on December 10th 2011.
We are sorry that we propose this study plan suddenly. However, couldn't you cooperate with us in this study plan.We are looking forward to a good reply from you.
How to study:
1. On the total eclipse of the moon on December 10th, we'll take pictures of the moon and stars around it at the same time at Kumagaya and Invercargill.(We're going to tell you the detailed time to take pictures.)
2. We compare the pictures with the star map and measure the parallax of the moon.
3. θ/360°=R/2πr ∴ r=R/2πr×360°/θ
R: the distance from Kumagaya to Invercargill
θ: the parallax of the moon
r: the distance from the earth to the moon
We calculate the distance from the earth to the equation.
Sincerely.

Thank you, Ms Midori.
I sent sum the following mail, too.

Dear Sam
Thank you for E-mail from your teacher Sasaki.
I am a Science teacher of Kumagaya high school in Japan.
What my student wanted to say is as follows.
Please take the photographs every ten minutes from 3:10AM to 3:50AM (Summer time of New Zealand) in December 11th, when the total lunar eclipse happens.
If some of the photographs clearly take the moon in the earth shadow and surrounding stars, it is a big success.
Let's take good photographs.
I pray this night to clear up, and to be able to take a good photograph.
Thank you.
OBATA, Kiichi
