CoreTemp giving me extremely low readings!

Hey all,

I recently put together an AMD AM2 system. I'm running an AMD 64 X2 5000+ (2.6ghz) at a 15multi resulting in 3.01Ghz. When I loaded up CoreTemp it gave me consistent readings of 1c/2c for each core. Motherboard temps still show up in bios at around 39c. What am I missing? Is there another program I can try?

Thanks

Wow thats weird. Might have to get The Coolest to look into that for you I havent heard of anyone else getting that problem on a BE.

Theres plenty of other programs to try, with varying degrees of accuracy.

SiSoft Sandra
Everest
MBM (motherboard monitor)
Speedfan
Hmonitor

Try them and see if theres any difference

EDIT: oh, btw to the forums ;D

thanks for the welcome yeah i know it's so weird. i got Hmonitor and i get the same readings. blah, that sucks. i have a feeling that it has something to do with tmy motherboard (Abit AN52).

also, for some reason my ram (which can run at 4-4-4-12), is locked in at a Cas Latency of 5. so, as of now i'm at 5-4-4-12. my motherboard lets me make the change, but obviously it's NOT changing. CPUz shows my ram to be running at CL = 5. This ram can definitely operate at a CL = 4, but for some reason it won't change.

any other suggestions would be sweet

CoreTemp, or any other program that reads the temp diodes, does not work properly on Brisbane cores. I have often seen negetive readings for core temperature using CoreTemp on Brisbane cores. We all know that can't be right.

You're best option is to just gauge off the socket temps the mobo is reporting.

I get the same thing with mine but instead of coretemp mine would show low temps with speedfan. Hwmoniter worked perfectly for me though.

Some helpful info. Sorry to say there is no work around since it is not a Coretemp issue.

I should caveat my previous post by saying that I was not implying the problem lies with CoreTemp or any other DTS reader, but that the problem lies in the Brisbane core itself.

Awesome. Thanks for the posts guys. So basically, when using Hmonitor, i'm getting core temp readings as follows:

Cores
Idle: 5c/6c
Load: 25c/27c

CPU
Idle: 35c
Load: 55c

I feel like the CPU temp readings are a little hot, and additionally, the inaccurate core readings still flucatuate around 20-25c.

Based on these observations, do you think i need to reapply thermal paste? I have a Zalman 9500 using stock thermal paste. I reapplied a smooth layer yesterday, but temps stayed about the same.

Right now my 5000+ is running at stock voltage, 15x200 = 3ghz. I want to hit 3.2ghz stable, but changed voltage settings (such as 1.4v, 16x200) increases temps and fails 1 of 2 Prime95 threads 5 minutes in.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

Mine reads 16c idle temperatures with coretemp.

Nothing to worry about. Just read the BIOS and feel the heatsink.

Wasn't Coretemp designed just for the Core 2 Duo based intel chips?!? Or is that just something that I rationalized in my head? I could swear that I read somewhere it was designed for Core 2 Duo processors only. So correct me if I'm wrong, because I hate being wrong.

Your temps seem fine btw. Whats the ambient like? Is your PSU upto the task?
