Can You Buy Meridia in the US?

Just when people think that they have finally found a cure for their weight problems, some new study has to ruin their hope of losing weight and keeping it off.  Sibutramine, better known as Meridia, is one of the most promising weight-loss drugs of the last decade.  It has repeatedly been found to decrease appetite but does not cause metabolic rate to slow like many of its counterparts.  Thus, Meridia is one of the few drug which can help weight loss over the long term and not just for a short period of time.

Of course, no weight loss drug is perfect.  Researchers discovered this during a controversial study called Sibutramine Cardiovascular Outcomes, or SCOUT.  The purpose of the study was to determine whether Meridia was safe for people with heart problems.  The study found that Meridia was safe with these at-risk people when used for a period of 6 weeks.  However, the study was criticized as being flawed for only using at-risk patients and not a control group.  Thus, another study was conducted in which researchers determined that Meridia may actually be dangerous for heart patients.  During the study, 11.4% of the Meridia users compared to 10% of the placebo users had “cardiovascular events.”

Whenever a medicine is suspected of being dangerous, the FDA always leans on the side of caution.  They didn’t ban Meridia because the medicine is too beneficial for many people and there is no evidence that it is dangerous for people without heart problems.  However, they did put pressure on the makers of Sibutramine to discontinue sales.  As of 2010, you cannot buy Meridia in the US.  However, Meridia is NOT banned which means it is still possible to buy Meridia from other countries and have it sent to the US.

If you are in the US and want to buy Meridia, then you will first need to obtain a prescription from your doctor.  Some online pharmacies may allow you to buy Meridia without a prescription if you fill out your medical history or have a consultation with an online doctor.  This is NOT a substitute for your own doctor though.  Even if you think you are healthy and not in the at-risk group (such as if you have heart problems or high blood pressure), you should still get a prescription from your doctor to buy Meridia.

The online pharmacy will send Meridia to your home address.  This will probably take a couple weeks because of the process of approving your prescription and then filling the order.  You can usually expedite the process but be prepared to pay for faster shipping times.  Be aware that customs can confiscate your Meridia order, though this rarely happens (according to customs, less than 1% of prescription drug orders are confiscated).  If this does occur, you will get a call from customs to come pick up your order.  You will have to show your doctor’s prescription to claim your order.
