Our long and complicated relationship with bacteria

Bacteria are such widely spread organisms that there is not a single complex organism in the world that hasn’t got a certain relationship with these single-cell organisms that make the world go round, so to say. Us humans, in particular have a rather complicated relationship with bacteria and it can be described as a mixed bag. For one, we would not be able to function the way we do if there weren’t many types of bacteria present in our bodies at all times, assisting natural processes in our bodies and enabling us to lead normal, everyday lives. However, on the other side, we have the types of bacteria whose intentions are not that good and that have shown extremely homicidal tendencies in the past and still do. The human population has been suffering from infections caused by bacteria since the first humans walked the Earth and bacteria have continued to play a significant role in our history ever since, decimating the world population on every turn. However, this changed greatly with the discovery of penicillin, the first antibiotic. This happened in the late 19^th century and since then, there have been many antibiotics developed and introduced.

Time for Sumycin to make its appearance

Sumycin is the brand name for tetracycline, one of the most important medications in the history of pharmaceutics. Namely, this was the first tetracycline antibiotic developed and it spawned a whole new group of antibiotics that were developed from this medication, and not only from its very group. An interesting piece of trivia is that traces of tetracycline have been discovered in ancient Egyptian mummies and it is most probably due to the brewing process they used to make beer. There are many uses for Sumycin and these uses include Rocky Mountain fever, psittacosis, Q fever, Chlamydia as well as to eradicate meningococci from the nasal cavities, thus preventing the spreading of the infection. Other urinary tract infections can be treated with Sumycin, as well as gonorrhea and acne. Historically, Sumycin played an important role in reducing the mortality in cases of cholera. It has been recently used to manage the outbreak of plague in India in 1992. Furthermore, Sumycin is also one of the medications that are recommended for prevention of malaria if you travel to areas where malaria is widespread. Sumycin inhibits the synthesis of protein in bacteria cells which in fact leads to their starvation.

Once you start using Sumycin, you need to make sure that you are taking Sumycin regularly as all antibiotics and Sumycin as well work best if there is a certain level of the medication in the system. It is also important that you do not discontinue your Sumycin regimen on your own, just because there are no symptoms. The infection can still be present even if you are not feeling any symptoms and you risk exacerbating the infection if you stop using Sumycin too soon.
