My experience is that of my dog contracting a bacterial infection due to the wound that another dog inflicted upon him when I was walking him one day. It was a simple case of a dog owner who does not know how to control his dog. I have to say that I am proud of my Fido for not fighting back. He knows better than that. Anyway, he contracted some kind of skin infection and it was soon very obvious that it is really bothering him. He kept scratching at it, he became irate and I decided to take him to the vet.
I was actually relieved when the vet told me it was nothing more than a simple bacterial infection, which is a much better option than something like rabies or something similarly sinister. He told me that it can be treated by a simple antibiotic regimen and to my surprise he prescribed Keflex. He told me that it has not been approved for use in dogs, but that it is very efficient and is no more dangerous than cefadroxil and other dog antibiotics.
I started giving Fido Keflex and after only a few days, the symptoms went away, he was no longer scratching and biting himself and was soon his old again. We had to do the whole Keflex treatment as this prevents the infection from exacerbating again. From then, I always recommend Keflex to dog owners who have troubles with bacterial infections.
