Macrobid – urinary tract infection treatment drug

Our natural nemesis – bacteria

There have been very few things in the history of humanity that have affected the human race as much as bacteria. These simple, single-cell organisms are something we have been in contact with since we evolved as a species. In fact, we wouldn’t be what we are if it weren’t for bacteria, many of which are in fact beneficial for our health, some of which we cannot even function, like the ones in our digestive system. Therefore, all bacteria are not our enemies. However, those that are, are the worst enemies we have ever encountered. If you were to combine all other causes of premature death, such as wars, other illnesses and all the natural disasters combined together, you would get a number that is nowhere close to the number of people who have died due to bacterial infections. From the simple tooth rot to much more complex and serious illnesses, we have been decimated by bacteria since the dawn of humanity. And there is a perfectly simple reason for this. First of all, we were not aware of bacteria until very recently and we had no idea that there are these miniscule organisms that are responsible for all these illnesses. And even when we became aware, it took us some time to develop certain kinds of medications, penicillin and then other antibiotics. Medications that are efficient in killing bacteria. Since then, we have had weapons that are able to help us with bacterial infections that are still not throwing in towels. The bacteria simply start to develop resistance to certain antibiotics and there is always need for new types of antibiotics that are going to be efficient.

This is where Macrobid comes in

Macrobid is the brand name of the antibiotic known as nitrofurantoin and this antibiotic is primarily used in treating urinary tract infections and other infections caused by E. coli. It has recently seen increase in interest as the different types of bacteria started to become resistant to other antibiotics that are more commonly used. Since these antibiotics are no longer efficient against certain types of bacteria, Macrobid has found its place, coming in off the bench to use a metaphor. It has to be noted that Macrobid has been said to be safe for use in pregnancy, but not after the 38th week, as it can affect eh blood cells in the fetus.

Macrobid treatment- things you need to know

Of course, if you are allergic to this type of antibiotics, you will not be able to take this medication. However, if you also have severe kidney disease, if you have history of liver problems or jaundice caused by previous treatment with this medication or if you have problems with urinating, you will also be unable to use this antibiotic. There are other conditions that will require additional monitoring once the treatment with Macrobid starts. One of the most common side effects of taking Macrobid is the darker color of the urine, but this is completely safe and expected.
