Prerequisites
To apply this software update on Windows XP, x86-based versions, you must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) installed on the computer. Additionally, you must have version 2.0.50727 of the Microsoft .NET Framework installed on the computer. This version of the .NET Framework is required to run managed framework snap-ins that are designed and built for MMC 3.0.
Note If you use only snap-ins that are designed for MMC 2.0 or for earlier versions, you do not have to install this version of the .NET Framework.
Restart requirement
You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update unless MMC is running at the time of the installation.
Update replacement information
This update does not replace any other updates.
File information
The English version of this update has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.
MMC 3.0 includes new reliability enhancements. One of these enhancements is the detection and optional reporting of MMC snap-in errors. If an error is detected, you receive the following error message in a dialog box:
MMC has detected an error in a snap-in. It is recommended that you shutdown and restart MMC
The name of the snap-in that experiences the problem is listed in the title bar of the dialog box. The error message dialog box describes the following three options that you can use:
Report this error to Microsoft, and then shut down MMC.
Continue to run, and then ignore errors that occur in this snap-in for the rest of the session.
Continue to run, and then always ignore errors that occur in this snap-in, regardless of the user or of the session.
Microsoft has identified some Microsoft snap-ins that will cause this dialog box to appear.

How to enable the new Add/Remove snap-in dialog box
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection, back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
Note The registry settings that are listed in this procedure to enable the new snap-in dialog box are optional. The old snap-in dialog box works fine if the new one is not enabled by using these registry settings.
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
In the left pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC
On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
Type UseNewUI as the new name, and then press ENTER.
When you try to add a managed code snap-in to MMC 3.0, you may receive the following error message:
MMC cannot initialize the Snap-in
This issue may occur if you are running another snap-in that depends on the .NET Framework 1.1, such as the .NET Framework 1.1 Configuration snap-in. Snap-ins that use different versions of the .NET Framework cannot be located in the same MMC. If you receive this error message, make sure that snap-ins that use different versions of the .NET Framework are in separate consoles.
Conflicts that occur with previous installations
Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. How to back up and restore the registry in Windows
When you try to add a managed code snap-in to MMC, you may receive the following error message:
MMC cannot initialize the Snap-in
This issue may occur if there is a version conflict with a previous MMC installation. If an earlier version of MMC is installed on the computer, remove the MMC version details from the Windows registry. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
In the left pane, locate and then expand the following registry subkey:
Remove all the registry entries under the InprocServer32 key except for the 3.0.0.0 entry.
On the File menu, click Exit.
Incompatible user preference settings for .msc files
MMC 3.0 user preferences, such as window sizes and locations, are stored in a format that is incompatible with MMC 2.0. After MMC 3.0 is installed, MMC 2.0 console files (.msc) that are opened may have user preferences that are updated to the MMC 3.0 format. If MMC 3.0 is later uninstalled, MMC 2.0 cannot open the console files that have these updated user preferences. To resolve this issue, remove all the files in the %HOMEPATH%\Application Data\Microsoft\MMC folder.

Description of the standard terminology that is used to describe Microsoft software updates
Technical support for x64-based versions of Microsoft Windows
Your hardware manufacturer provides technical support and assistance for x64-based versions of Windows. Your hardware manufacturer provides support because an x64-based version of Windows was included with your hardware. Your hardware manufacturer might have customized the installation of Windows with unique components. Unique components might include specific device drivers or might include optional settings to maximize the performance of the hardware. Microsoft will provide reasonable-effort assistance if you need technical help with your x64-based version of Windows. However, you might have to contact your manufacturer directly. Your manufacturer is best qualified to support the software that your manufacturer installed on the hardware.
