I have been craving change with my hair. I saw this picture and got inspired.
This reminds me of a Ravens or Peacocks. I love it
So I went to Sally’s and bought the following dyes and a bleach kit.
Manic Panic Atomic Turquoise
Manic Panic Ultra Violet
Beyond the Zone Purple Passion
N’Rage Blue-Black (2 bottles)
Ray helped me get the bleach in, and later the dye.
We foiled at an angle from the right side of my head towards the back left side.
The first foil was Atomic Turquoise. The next was Ultra Violet.
Then we did Purple Passion. Then Ultra Violet.
Then we did 2 smaller Atomic Turquoise sections.
The rest of my hair we dyed Blue-Black. It took just about all of the 2 bottles of Blue-Black to do the non-colored pieces.
Here’s my before picture.
Here’s me after washing the bleach out of my hair.
I bleached the top part of my hair and most of the Raspberry Kamikaze out of my side pieces.
I left the dye in for about 3 hours, which is what I typically do with Manic Panic type dyes (I’ll leave it in for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours since they’re vegetable dyes). The colored sections were all foiled, and the blue-black was left alone. I rinsed out all of the blue-black first, and once I was satisfied it had all been rinsed out, I then took out the foils and rinsed out the colored sections.
And here are the after shots:
OMG that is so gorgeous!! I love it!

I love it! Not at all what I was thinking when you were twittering about it. You're a brave soul. I'd be scared sh*tless to try that!

Hi Lyndsey,
Thank you!
I really do too!
I almost went blonde but at the last minute went no, I think I need to do this.
Hi Robyn,
Thanks so much!
What were you thinking?
And I've had my hair black, blue, green, turquoise, red, orange, pink, purple, etc.
I'm not afraid of color
Hi Kelly,
Thanks!

Holy crap that is seriously one of the best at-home dye jobs I have EVER seen!
If I ever can go back to colored hair, I will definitely be inspired by yours!

Hi Robyn,
I've had people suggest that I should go snow white with my hair, but I've never been brave enough to let my hair bleach to that shade of white blonde.
Hi Brooke,
Thanks so much!
I think pulling off color is all about the attitude If you think you look good, you will look good.

Hi MissTat,
Thanks!
I've been dyeing my hair on and off on my own and with help from friends and Ray for almost 15 years. I think the whole reason this worked so well was doing the foiling of different colors and different sized sections of hair along the top at an angle.

Gorgeous!
How did you find that bleach kit?? The last time I had my hair bleached (at my salon) it totally FRIED my hair…I was hoping maybe a home kit wouldn't be as harsh. Also…I have never tried Manic Panic…but have been dying to. Does it stay a long time?? Along with the previous bleaching…I dyed the aforementioned crispy critter blue…also at the salon…and it washed out!

Hi Concertina,
I used the Beyond the Zone Bleach Kit, which is sold at Sally's Beauty supply.
What I have found to work best with my hair is to bleach it up a bit, then wash out the bleach.
Then I apply the bright color and foil it to keep it separate. Then I apply whatever the main color is (sometimes I use permanent black, other times demi-permanents).
I leave the vegetable dye type colors, such as Manic Panic or Beyond the Zone or N'Rage (anything without bleach or peroxide or anything) on my hair for anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. Now, I really saturate the color on my hair when I do this, too. Then I cover all of my hair in a cap and let it stay that way for however long I'm going to leave it. Then I wash it out, and once the color comes clean I shampoo and condition.
Another trick you can do with Manic Panic is to mix a bit of 20 developer with the Lightest ash blonde permanent or clear permanent color you can find, and mix that into your Manic Panic color. With this mixture I leave the color on for no longer than a half hour. This will help the color stay around longer, too.

Hi Robyn,
Thank you!
I used the turquoise very sparingly and mostly just used the blue-purple and the purple all over the rest of the top section and the blue-black on the bottom 2/3 of the hair. I'm glad that it looks different I was hoping to be sort of reminiscent of a raven's feather, with how it can change.

Phyrra, that is really gorgeous, totally striking on you! I'd love to do that to my hair – my job won't allow it, but I will do that one day.
