How to Use Toner to Remove Yellow-Bleached Hair

How to Use Toner to Remove Yellow-Bleached Hairthumbnail
Toner will tame the yellow brassiness in bleached hair.

Originally, when you walked out of the salon you had beautiful blonde hair that glistened in the sun. Now, days or weeks later, your hair has turned an odd shade of yellow instead of blonde. This is not uncommon and is often referred to as "brassy." While the look is discouraging, do not fret, it will come out. While there are several options to remove the yellow shade, a toner will work quickly and efficiently. In addition, toner is gentler on your hair because it contains less peroxide than other products.

Look for toners that have a blue or violet undertone. The blue or violet will counteract the yellow and even the shade out. Toners are available at drugstores and beauty supply stores.

      • 2

Read through the directions of the toner completely. Each brand is different and will contain a different set of directions. In addition, the directions will explain how to mix the toner and how long to leave the toner on your hair. Mix the toner.

Comb through your hair and part it down the center. Section the hair into four different areas -- left top, right top, left nape and right nape. This will make applying the toner easier and more efficient.

      • 4

Apply the toner around the hairline. Work the toner into the roots and scalp until they are saturated completely.

      • 5

Release the left top section. Apply the toner down the center part and massage the toner into your roots. Move one inch to the left of the center part and part the hair. Apply the toner in the same manner as the center part. Move one inch to the left again and repeat. Continue working through the entire left top until complete. Repeat for the right top.

Release the left nape section and apply the toner to the roots. Continue working through the left nape until all the roots are saturated with toner. Repeat for the right nape.

      • 7

Work the toner throughout the hair from roots to tips. If the yellow is only in the root area, then avoid pulling the toner all the way to the tips.

      • 8

Wait the allotted time as recommended in the directions, typically 15 to 25 minutes. Look at the color before you rinse to ensure the color looks "normal." If it is not, wait another five to 10 minutes before rinsing.

      • 9

Rinse the toner out completely when the time is complete. Shampoo the hair after the water runs clear. Dry and style as normal.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Apply a deep conditioner to hair once a week to maintain the shine and prevent hair breakage.

    • Before stepping out in the sun, spray your hair with a heat-protectant spray, which will protect against ultraviolet rays. In addition, spray your hair prior to any use of a heated styling tool.

    • The toner may need to be reapplied within two to six weeks. Toner is a semi-permanent hair color and will fade over time.
