If you are one of the millions of men taking Sildenafil (better known by its brand name of Viagra), then you probably pay about $15 per pill at your local pharmacy. This amount can add up quickly, making sex a costly luxury. More prudent men save money on their Sildenafil prescription by buying it online. Brand-name Viagra usually costs about $10 per pill at licensed online pharmacies. While this may be cheaper, it will still cost you over $1000 per year to have sex twice a week.
For men all over the world, sex is about to become a lot more affordable. That is because the patent on Viagra is about to run out. When this happens, the door will be open for hundreds of other companies besides Pfizer to make their own versions of Viagra. Yes, all these generic versions of Viagra will also contain Sildenafil, be just as effective as Viagra, and meet the strict regulations of the FDA. But, thanks to the laws of competition, we can expect the price of sildenafil to drop drastically. Already, there are unapproved versions of generic Viagra online for as little as $3 per pill. Once they become approved and more competition seeps in, we may see the price drop to below $1.
While men are celebrating cheaper sildenafil, Pfizer is scrambling to keep its profits up. They stand to lose a lot of money once generic Viagra becomes readily available. In 2010 alone, ED drugs (sildenafil, Vardenafil and Tadalafil) brought in more than $5 billion in worldwide sales! While men may be loyal to the Viagra brand name, many are ultimately going to go with the cheapest sildenafil, especially once they see that the results are the same.
To keep up customer interest, Pfizer has come up with some new marketing strategies which have already been called-out as gimmicks. One of the strategies is “Viagra Jet”, a chewable version of sildenafil which supposedly kicks in even faster than regular Viagra. Sildenafil’s competitors have also come out with some gimmicks. Vardenafil (brand name Levitra) is now available as an dissolvable tablet under the name Staxyn. We can probably also expect to see some other gimmicks from sildenafil as well.
Are these new versions of sildenafil any better than Viagra or the generics? Probably not. But, since they are new and exciting, it may be enough to get men to stick with the Viagra brand rather than go with the cheaper alternatives. Pfizer is aware that the gimmicks will only get them so far. They are already prepared to lower the costs of Viagra to under $10 per pill. So, even if you are one of those guys who likes to go with the brand-name versions of products, you can expect to pay less for your ED medicine.
