For instance, the first time I had a migraine attack, I was unable to move. I could feel the light burning into my brain and every noise was agony. In the end I even threw up and it took me more than 24 hours to go through it all. At moments, I thought I was dying. I think I was under 20 at that time. Today, after more than 15 years of migraine attacks occurring every few weeks, I can say that I am no longer afraid that I will die during the attacks, but it is still hell every single time.
I have heard that some people see something like an aura around objects before the attack begins. For me, this is not the case. I sometimes wished that it was because I would be then able to predict and prepare for it. This way, it all happens very quickly. I start feeling the pain and before I know it, it starts to feel as if someone is jabbing me with a knife. I start finding noise and light unbearable and the only way to go through it is to sit in a dark room and not move. Sometimes I also vomit and sometimes I don’t. I prefer it when I do because I feel certain relief at that moment.
I should now tell you that I have tried dozens of different medications for my migraines. I have a friend who is a fellow migraine-sufferer and we let each other know when we hear of new medications that might help. I think that we have tried absolutely every medication that was ever advertised for migraine and even a few that were not. We even got some drugs from Europe that are insanely strong and he actually found one that worked quite a long time ago. For me, the search took a bit longer.
In the end, it turned out that one of the less powerful medications that I have tried did the trick. It was Fioricet. It is a medication that contains butalbital, caffeine and acetaminophen and that can sometimes be used for migraines even though it is not that potent and is usually used for ordinary headaches. Still, for me it did the trick. I have later tried some other medications with butalbital, some stronger, some weaker, but in the end I settled on Fioricet.
The main thing for me is that it does not cause nausea and that I have no side effects from it. There was one medication that alleviated the pain, but that made me feel like crap. This is not an issue with Fioricet. It turns out that this combination of butalbital, caffeine and acetaminophen is perfect for me. I cannot tell you what a relief it is to finally have something that can make the pain go away or at least reduce it to the point where it is bearable.
