Former British and European heavyweight boxing champion Matt Skelton was today jailed for five months after a court convicted hm of attempting to pervert the course of justice in order to avoid car speeding fines.
Skelton, who also fought for the WBA heavyweight title, admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice three times between November 2006 and August 2008. His car, complete with personalised number plate was clocked speeding.
The court heard how Skelton is said to have falsely given the name of car valet Brian Williams as the driver three times and provided at least one false address.
The judge in charge of the case Judge Gareth Hawkesworth said Skelton was a ’role model’ and that the court had to ’set an example’ to show ’no-one is above the law’.
Skelton will be eligible for parole after serving half of his five month sentence.
