Folder and sub-folder view settings. (Microsoft XP)

Fri, 30 May 2008 18:03:00 GMT

When you change the view of a folder from the standard Icon view to the List or
Details view, is there any way of getting Windows to automatically change the
view of all the sub-folders under that folder as well? (not ALL folders, just
the sub-folders of that folder).

Chris.

I don't think it can be done automatically.
However, if you select "remember each folders view settings"
    in folder options/view
you can visit those child folders and then you'll have to individually
set them. Windows *should* then remember those settings.

  • Hi Chris,

No, you will have to do that individually.

Unfortunately there are about 300 sub-folders involved so setting them all
manually is a bit of a pain, although that is what I did before.

Windows does remember the settings... until something happens that re-sets them
all back to the default icon view (in this case it was moving the whole lot to
    another logical drive).

  • Settings are stored by the path used to access. So even setting a folder =
one way it won't show the same settings if accessed another way.

    EG
    My Comp\C:\Docs & Settings\My Documents\a folder
    has different settings to
    My Documents\a folder

even though you end up in the same folder.

Perhaps you should work in a different way. If you don't remember folder =
settings then all folders take their settings from the first folder =
    opened.

So if you set My Comp to Icon and My Docs to Details - viewing a folder =
by starting a window at My Comp you'll see everything in Icon Style and =
if you start a window at My Docs everything is Detail view.

no - sorry . You can set a global default, or a single folder at a
time, but not a folder tree

Interesting idea, but it does not seem to work!

Under "Folder options" I unchecked the "Remember folder view settings" box, and
also clicked on "Restore defaults" to get everything back to a known state (i.e.
all folders in Icon view). However, if I now change the view for a "root" folder
to Details view the sub-folders do not follow the change. Also, if I change the
view or display size of a sub-folder then Windows still remembers it!

  • Am reading in the middle of this....that said, some info. Use as needed:

By default, Windows is designed to remember 400 different folder settings
(200 local folders and 200 network folders, for a total of 400 folders).
Windows will start to re-use these stored settings on a 'Most Recently Used'
basis, once the folder limit has been exceeded. You can change this to 8000
by adding this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

    Windows Explorer/View/[Select Accordingly]. Then Tools/Folder
    Options/View/Apply to All Folders.

If this is not what you are looking for: Go to Windows
Explorer/Tools/Folder Options. From there you can change the settings as to
whether or not a separate window is displayed for each folder and then if
separate windows are used individual view settings should be remembered.

  • Hi Kelly,

I have been reading your reply to this thread and I have exactly the same
problem with keeping the settings for Details View in all folders. I've
posted several times trying to get an answer to the problem that actually
worked for more than one Windows session. I applied the registry fix
mentioned on your website when I had XP SP1, and this worked for a while.
After upgrading to SP2 I thought that it might have been fixed and yes, the
registry setting has been increased to 8000 from 400 by the upgrade, but the
problem persists. I have even increased the 8000 to 4 or 5 times that
amount, but the Details View only remains during the current session and on
either a re-start or a boot from being switched off, Explorer is back in
Tiles View in all folders. I have done everything that has been recommended
by various people including MVPs, including the deletion of the relevant
entries in the registry and allowing Windows to re-make them.

I am wondering if it's just my machine, but by the number of people writing
in with similar problems I think not.
