Confused My Picture Folder...blank thumbnails...?

Hi,I'm brand new here! My user name is short for 1993 Harley SofTail Custom.
Anyway,a while back my picture folder stopped showing the actual pictures, only a generic thumbnail. Although when I pull up the folder to attach a picture to an email, they're there!? What's up?
Thanks in advance and please keep in mind that I'm PC Illiterate!

Ciao!

Hi,
Sounds like your folder view is set to tiles. Click on View and then click either filmstrip or thumbnails on the menu that drops down.
Nice Bike

T.,
I tried 'em all and nothing changed!
Yeah,I love my bike, thanks! I'd post a pic but I don't know how to get them small enough to "fit" here. Imagine that?!

Nope, that's not your bike. I haven't got any ideas at the moment for your thumbnail problem. I can help with the resizing of pictures. This is the address for a freeware program that you can use to change the size or format of graphics. http://www.irfanview.com/index.htm It's really simple to use.
Just had a thought. Does the same thing apply if you put some pictures in a new folder or only the MY PICTURES folder?

Maybe this will work...

I've created several new folders with the same result...nada. Maybe I need to post this in every topic on the board!

I think you're posted in the right place as it's probably a setting or a glitch but if you think it might be something nasty don't hesitate to get it moved to security.
I did some research and got a couple things but I don't hold out a lot of hope. I only bring them up because they sort of relate, they're simple, and you could get lucky.Plus it bumps this up where somebody else will see it and hopefully chime in.
First off, I know you've done this but go this site to be sure you didn't overlook something. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...n/folders.mspx
Next go Tools>Folder options>View tab and make sure "Remember each folders view settings" is checked. Also uncheck "Do not cache thumbnails"and hit OK. That last will enable thumbnails to load faster but I've never seen much difference. It can't hurt and you can recheck it later if it doesn't help.
I found this quote in a very lengthy and boring article:
"For the thumbnail not updating try deleting the thumbs.db file in
that folder. It is the cache of images for the thumbnails. It will be
recreated. It is a hidden file so make sure in Control Panel | Folder
Options | View, Show hidden files and folders is selected."
You may or may not have a thumbs.db but it's worth a shot.
Also on the Options view tab you could try Reset All Folders. That should put them back to the default state but you will have to reset any customizations you've done on all folders. Big Pain!
That exhausts my vast knowledge on your problem
If it's a no-go just post back in a day or so to bump it back up and hope someone has a solution. In the meantime try giving your pictures very descriptive names (My Bike, My Dog, etc.) so you can tell what they are without seeing them.
Sorry I couldn't be more help,
T.
By the way, Very Nice Bike, cute pup too.

Idea

I have the same problem, seeing this forced me to investigate it lol, anyway not totally sure this is what you want exactly, but here is what I did to be able to see each picture without opening it, open the folder the pictures are in, I don't think it matters if there are several folders as I think this will apply to ALL picture formats, anyway, with the folder open click on View on the menu bar then to-wards the bottom of the list click on "Customise this folder" and you will get a properties box appear, at the top click on the "Customise" tab and at the top you will see a drop down box, within that select the picture option that suits your needs, I set mine to "Pictures (best for many pictures), click on apply and you should see pictures in place of icons now, does that help ?

Much thanks for your input. Wish I could say the problem was solved. Sorry to say,it ain't. Must be something more sinister than a mere option selection. Like, one day it was there and the next day....gone.
If it's some sort of malware,Spysweeper,A2,and Kaspersky's haven't found it. Having to open every picture is putting a cramp in my sphincter. Think I'll go for a ride. It's 70* in NC.

Thought sure 8210GUY was on to it. Did you try making a new folder and doing the dropdown for pictures before putting anything in it? If not, give it a try and then put a couple pics in.

I've seen a similar problem before. Try lowering your screen colour depth & resolution. then return it to normal.

when you next transfer photos to the computer, start a new folder and save them as jpeg's instead of bmp's , see if that cures it in future

The post by linesman gave me an idea. Go Tools>Folder Options>File Types. Scroll down the list and make sure BMP, JPEG, and GIF are listed. If not, add them.
Also reread your original post and was wondering if you got a new camera around the time this started. If so check here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...photo/raw.mspx

are the pics saved as bitmap files ?

-some are,but by far not all. The 2 files that I posted here just happened to meet the size requirements. Most pics are jpg.
- Camera? Well, not directly. i sent a few from my camera phone via email thru Verizon.
- that file type list is a mile long but includes jpg,gif and bitmap.
- I just added 2 images from my scanner into a new folder and..........well..................you know.

Just for kicks I downloaded MS.NET Framework. And the results were....(drumroll please)...
#1-ERROR. iNTERNAL (should that read INFERNAL?) ERROR 2908
#2- INSTALL ERROR 1935
#3-Setup has ended prematurely
#4-Install Shield ERROR 1603

I say the "fix" would be both barrels of a 12 GA. All in favor say "Aye" !!
