Three things to remember when you are working with computers.
• First thing is "YOU CAN DO IT".
• Second take your time, a little mistake can cause a big problem.

Internet Explorer Hangs

• As time changes so do the problems that come up. With more people using popup killers, anti-virus programs that also have popup killer, spy detectors and fire walls. Sometimes these are the cause of slow downloading. They filter the material thus slowdown the downloading process.
• The first thing I look for anymore is these programs, disable each of them and then try to see if it helps.
• The second thing I check if you are using a network card or a cable modem to connect to the internet is if there is a modem installed. If so disable it in the device managers program. This is the one that works most of the time, IF you have a network card and a modem installed.
• Then if none of the above helps these might solve your problems, they might not. I think each computer is different but they are here for you to try.
• Several methods. Use at your own risk. Remember to please back up any registry keys you either change or delete.

• This was sent to me, may work for some but not all, I do not know but you can try it.
  • If the following will work then the fixie.inf should also work and would be much easier to do so you may want to give it a try first.
    • Reinstall IE
      • This is also associated with the following Error Messages
        Error: The specified module could not be found.
        URL: res://c:\windows\system32\shdoclc.dll\preview.dlg
      • Make sure ie.inf exists in c:\windows\inf directory
      • Browse to the file ie.inf located at c:\windows\inf
      • Right click the file
      • Click install
      • This is a hidden file so make sure you have your computer set to show all files.
  • The following was suggested by Tom.
    • This seems to deal with IE Explorer 6 and XP version of windows whereas the others are for all versions of windows.
    • I wanted to reciprocate via a solution for the 'Internet explorer hangs" section.
    • None of your solutions worked, nor did at least 10 others.
    • Here is an additional solution that worked for me, Tom
      • Reinstall IE 6 via the download on Microsoft. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=1E1550CB-5E5D-48F5-B02B-20B602228DE6&displaylang=en
      • This will download a small file ie6setup.exe which will then download the other files necessary to install.
    • But there will be a problem in that the install ie6setup.exe cannot work due to a prior installation, for this you need to edit the registry key.
    • After the registry key is changed from "1" to "0" as explained in the article.
    • Your reinstall via ie6setup.exe will be enabled.
      • Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Reinstall or repair Windows XP
        • Use the System File Checker tool to scan all of the protected files on your computer:
        • Click Start
        • Click Run
        • In the Open box, type
          sfc /scannow
        • Click OK
        • Note that you may be prompted for the Windows XP or Windows XP Service Pack 1 installation media
        • Test to determine if the issue is resolved.
        • If the issue is resolved, skip the remaining steps.
        • If the issue is not resolved, continue to the next step.
      • Complete an in-place upgrade of Windows XP, a repair of Windows XP, or reinstall Windows XP
      • To reinstall Windows XP updates, visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site: (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/)
    • Windows XP and Windows XP SP1: Edit the registry and install Internet Explorer 6
      • Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system.
      • Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly.
      • Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
      • When you try to reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer, you may receive the following error message:
        • Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
        • Setup cannot continue.
        • To avoid this error message and reinstall the same version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express, follow these steps:
          • While you are logged on as an administrator, click Start
          • Click Run
          • In the Open box type
            regedit
            • Cclick OK
            • Locate the appropriate registry subkey, right-click the IsInstalled (REG_DWORD) value
            • Click Modify
      • To reinstall only the Internet Explorer 6 browser component on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
        Active Setup\Installed Components\
        {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}
      • To reinstall only Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP, use the following registry key:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\
        Active Setup\Installed Components\
        {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}
      • Change the value data from 1 to 0
      • Click OK
      • Quit Registry Editor
      • Re-install Internet Explorer 6
      • Re-install Windows XP updates
  • After reinstalling, my ie6 windows opened up just fine.

  This first suggestion listed below is for those on a network.
  • Computer hangs on network
  • Go to Start
  • Click on Settings
  • Click on Control Panel
  • Double click Network
  • Go to the tcp/ip's and locate the one with your NIC, (3Com, SMC, Dlink,) besides it and double click it.
  • Change the setting from Obtain an IP Automatically to Specify and IP Address:
  • For the IP address you can use 192.168.56.8 and for the subnet mask, use 255.255.255.0
  • Click OK the click OK again.
  • You will have to reboot and that should fix the hanging problem.

  This tip works on ALL Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000 systems with MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6 installed.
  • This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows O/S that scan shared (remote) folders/files across the network for Scheduled Tasks, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search the remote computer(s). :(
  • Open Regedit (Win 95/98/ME) or Regedt32 (WinNT4/2000) and go to:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
    RemoteComputer\NameSpace
  • Highlight this value:
  • {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}
  • Delete it: right-click on it; select Delete; click OK.
  • This Registry change takes effect immediately.
    
    
  • Note: Upgrading to a newer MS Internet Explorer release may add this key to your Registry during Setup, therefore you may need to delete it again after installing MS IE.

  • I have discovered the reason for Internet pauses. Your provider is giving you a dynamic IP address. I demanded a static IP address and my problem has never reoccurred. It took me 6 months of arguing with my provider but this solved the problem.
    • Dynamic IP = a new IP address every time you connect to your provider
    • Static IP = same IP all the time.

  • These are your protocol bindings to your network card(s). When you remove network cards or install and remove protocols, these registry entries don't get removed properly. I've installed/reinstalled a couple different NIC's and some Internet connection sharing software, so I had about 3 TCP/IP entries for one NIC. I should've known these entries would be piling up like flotsam.
  • I rebooted, added the protocols back to the system (in the "network" setup of the control panel), and rebooted.
  • No more annoying pauses.
  • I wouldn't recommend doing this if you don't know how to reconfigure your TCP/IP, or understand the registry editor. *insert standard disclaimer of at your own risk*
  • (If you're really good, you can delete only the unused old 000n entries, but that requires a bit of sleuthing to figure it out. And if you're that good you should be able to just as quickly add the protocols back properly anyway.)

  • Not sure how you are connecting but I have DSL service and until I got a router had to use a pppoe client.
  • The actual network adapter doesn't get the IP address,, the pppoe, ie, raspppoe, or win poet does.
  • When I was surfing, about every 5 or 6 minutes IE would hang for 20 or 30 seconds, like clockwork.
  • Was the NIC tcpip trying to find a DHCP server to get an IP address, put in an internal IP, 192.168.54.1 and fixed the problem.
  • If you aren't using a pppoe, client like I was, this will cause a problem and not fix anything.

  Symptoms
  • When you try to upgrade your computer to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), your computer may stop responding (hang) during Setup or you may see the following behavior after you upgrade your Windows Me computer:
    • When you attempt to install Internet Explorer 5.5 Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Internet Explorer 6, Setup may stop responding (hang) when it reaches 70 percent completion, or you may receive the following error message: Error 52: Setup could not finish opening a file on your destination disc.
    • The Add New Hardware wizard may stop responding, or upon starting, your computer may stop responding when Plug and Play detects that a new device is installed or attached to your computer.
    • When you install critical updates from the Windows Update Web site, your computer may stop responding.
    • When you install the Virtual Machine update, your computer may stop responding.
    • When you install DirectX 8.0, your computer may stop responding.
  Resolution
  • To resolve this issue, apply the fix referenced in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • Q301540 Create File Improperly Returns ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS if the Drive Is Locked and the File Did Not Exist
  • To work around this issue, delete all Oem*.inf files in the Windows\Inf folder that are 0 KB in size.
  • To delete all of the 0 KB files, follow these steps:
  • Set Windows to show all files. To do so, open Windows Explorer, on the Tools menu, click Folder Options, click the View tab, and then select the Show hidden files and folders option.
  • Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  • In the Search for files or folders named box, type OEM*Inf.
  • Verify that the Look in box shows C:\Windows\Inf.
  • Click Search Now.
  • In the Search Results window, click the header of the Size column to sort the files by size. If you cannot see the Size column, maximize the Search Results window.
  • Select all of the files that have a size greater that 0 kilobytes (KB) to a temporary location. To do so:
    • In the Search Results window, click the first file that has a size greater than 0 KB, and then press and hold down the SHIFT key as you click the last file that has a size greater than 0 KB.
    • On the Edit menu, click Copy.
    • Right-click an empty space on the desktop, point to New, and then click Folder.
    • Type an appropriate name for the folder (for example, type oeminf), and then press ENTER.
    • Right-click the new folder, and then click Paste.
  • Remove the 0 KB .inf files. To do so:
    • Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click MS-DOS Prompt.
    • At the command prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:
      • cd \windows\inf
      • del OEM*.inf
      • exit
    • NOTE: This process can take several minutes, depending on the speed of the computer and on the number of files that are in the Inf folder. On older computers with a large number of files (40,000 or more), this process can take up to an hour to finish.
  • Close all open windows.
  • Disable all disk utility programs, and then install the Windows Me updates.

The files are all in descending order (Z-A) instead of ascending (A-Z)
• Right-click the Start button
• Click Explore
• Click drive C:.
• On the View menu, click Details .
• Sort the items the way you want them, then click View
• Click Folder Options
• Click View
• Click Like Current Folder
• Click OK
• Now press and hold down the CTRL key, and then, keeping the Ctrl key depressed, quit Windows Explorer by clicking Close in the File Menu.
• Release the CTRL key.
• Restart your computer.
OR
• Note: If you have TWEAKUI installed go to the Explorer Tab and make sure that the "Save Explorer windows settings" box is checked before proceeding.
• Note: If you have limited your items through msconfig startup make sure you jot down the ones you have unchecked before selecting selective startup in fix.
• Shut down any programs you may have running.
• Go to Start\Run and type msconfig and hit enter
• Go to startup tab and take note of any item that do not have a check mark in their box
• Click General tab and then click Selective Startup and uncheck the Load Startup group items, Click Apply, Click OK, and restart system.
• After system restarts double click My Computer go to View and then select Folder Options.
• Click on the View Tab and make sure the box "Remember each folders view settings" is checked, then click OK.
• Double click "C" drive and go to View, click to select the details tab, and then set Arrange Icons by Name.
• Note: All icons should now be sorted by name.
• Hold down the CTRL key and click the X in the upper right corner of the window to close it.
• Note: This forces Windows to remember the setting.
• Now reopen C drive and see if your files are listed by name and details. Next select the first folder from C and open it and see if it is now arranged by name. If it is disregard next steps.
• If not go to View and click "Arrange icons by Name" then hold down the CTRL key when closing the folder to force it to remember the setting.
• Note: Retry Step 9 on several folders to insure setting takes.
• Restart system.
• Go to Start\run and type in MSConfig again and add check to box "Load Startup group items" Click Apply, click OK and restart.
Change the Default E-mail Program  when Internet Options does not work. Change path to default E-mail Program  in the registry

• In the Open field type regedit and click OK.
• Once you are there, navigate your way to the following folder:
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto\shell\open\command
• From there, double click on the (Default) icon.
• In the Value Data field, type the path of the program you want as the new default.
• Before clicking OK, type %1 after the path. IT should look something like this:
  • C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Outlook.exe %1

Remove Third Party branding in IE Explorer (logo)

• To remove third party branding:
• Click Start
• Click Run
• Copy and paste this the following into the Run dialog box:
  rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear
• Click OK
• Reboot
OR
• Close IE Explorer and Outlook Express and Outlook
• Go to Start
• Click on Run
• Type in or copy and paste
  regedit
• Click OK
• Find the following key
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
• Delete the items from the right pane
  "BrandBitmap" and "SmBrandBitmap"
• If you find the items "BigBitmap" and "SmallBitmap" delete them as well.
• Find the following key and do the same.
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
• Close Registry Edit window

Remove Third Party Name from Internet Explorer Title Bar


• Go to Start
• Run
• Type in
  regedit
  • Navigate to the key below
    • H_KEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
    • Change value of Window Title= to what you want to display
    • If there is no string value listed in the right pane as you see below, highlight Main in the left pane
    • Click edit on the Menu Bar
    • Click new String Value and type in Window Title
    • Double click on Window Title and in the new window type in the name you want to appear
    • Then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

• Click on Start
• Click on Run
• Type in
  • Regedit
• Navigate to and examine the subkeys under
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions
• Delete the ones you do not want.

Remove Third Party Sites from the "View/Toolbars Menu in IE Explorer

• Click on Start
• Click on Run
• Type in
  • Regedit
• Navigate to and examine the subkeys under
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbars
• Delete the ones you do not want.

AOL won't open Internet Sites or open E-mail 
How do I clear the cache in AOL?
• Web browsers temporarily store information from the Internet on your hard drive in an area called the cache. When the cache fills up, browser speed slows down, and your hard drive may run out of space.
• To clear the cache in AOL, perform the following steps:
• Step #1  From the AOL toolbar, click Settings, click Preferences
  
  
  
• Step #2  From Preferences, click Internet Properties (WWW).
  
  
  
• Step #3  In the Temporary Internet files section, click Delete Files.
  
  
  
• Step #4  Put a tic in the box to Delete all offline content, Click OK
  
  
  
• Step #5  Set the number of days between 1 and 3 days, Click Clear History button, then Click OK
