Has anyone noticed that Windows Explorer in XP works differently than previous windows versions? It does not always remember to display the status bar, and when you right click and highlight the Undo action from the context menu, it does not show in the status bar what the last action was. Does anyone have the same problem and does anyone know how to fix this?

Under Tools>Folder options, click the View tab and make sure that "remember each folders view settings" is checked.

That option is checked, and it does not control the status bar. What that option controls is whether each folder should remember the way it is displaying its icons (detail, tile, list, etc...) But the status bar is still lost sometimes.

Another problem I forgot to mention before is that sometimes in the lefthand folder-tree panel of Windows Explorer a folder appears two times. For example, if I put in a CD and go to Explorer and click on the little + sign to expand the tree, it might show the same folder two times (one under the other).

Re: 2nd paragraph: My XP Windows Explorer does the same as yours. Just a minor irritant. Windows 98 does something similar, keeps putting 2 W: drives below the Zip or CD. Refresh takes care of it for awhile. Maybe it's because my computers are networked.

I work with Windows Explorer exclusively, always have. The double entry has occurred many times on mine also.

One last try... Open 1 Windows Explorer window, select the view settings you prefer, then click the Apply to All Folders button under the View tab. Then close Windows Explorer by going to File>Close.

Bert,

Didn't know whether you were referring to this one,
it toook me a while to locate:

"Drive W:" Replaces Control Panel and Printers Icons and Names

------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.01, 5.01 Service Pack 1, 5.5 for Windows 95
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.01, 5.01 Service Pack 1, 5.5 for Windows 98
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 5.01, 5.01 Service Pack 1, 5.5 for Windows 98 Second Edition

------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
The icons for the Control Panel and Printers folders may change to a Microsoft WordPad icon, and their names may change to "Drive W:". Also, when you double-click either of these icons, you may receive the following error message:

W:\ is not accessible.

This folder was moved or removed.

CAUSE
This problem can occur after you start a Microsoft Office program such as Microsoft Word 2000 by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, and then clicking the program while Windows Explorer is running.

RESOLUTION
To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:

In Windows Explorer, click Refresh on the View menu.

Start the Office program by using a shortcut that is not on the Start menu.

STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

Thanks, I never did come up with that one. Just goes to show you, no one can know all there is about computers but every one knows something.

Re-read this and re: the product list, they should add I.E. 5.5 w/SP1 and SP2. It did it to me in each as I moved up and in both Win98FE and SE.

I know what you mean, they don't seem to update it. Sometimes I just leave that info out, otherwise the asker says something to the effect that "I'm using IE5.5 and that article only applies to IE4". Well...not neccessarily.

I too, am seriously bugged about the lack of status bar. I can open a single folder and ask it to display status bar upon every visit but it never sticks!

from MS:

are displayed by default.

click Status Bar on the View menu.

This behavior is by design.
