Open any folder (like my documents)
set it the way you want it (list)
    go to TOOLS
    Folder Options
    View
Uncheck "Remember Each Folders View Settings"
Then check (at top) apply to all folders

    Hope this helps.

You can also go into any folder in explorer and select 'view', then 'list' or 'details' or whatever you like. Then select 'tools', 'Folder Options...' and select the 'view' tab, push the button labeled 'Apply to all folders'.
