How do you deal with insomnia? What do you usually do if you have a hard time sleeping?

According to the Yahoo! Philippines News article http://bit.ly/d1wR2R, about 50% of adults have occasional insomnia while 10% have chronic insomnia. There are different causes which means there are different ways to deal with it as well. Have you experienced insomnia? If so, how did you deal with it? What did you do to beat insomnia?

Chosen Answer:

Yes I have had insomnia for some 30 years and counting. This is how I deal with it.

Between 10pm – midnight sleep 2 hours. Then do business preparation for 1 hour over a glass of wine. As my thinking slows down I go back to sleep for another couple of hours. Then get on the phone to Europe (they are 8 hours ahead) conducting my business. Around 7am I go to sleep for 2-3 hours again. In the afternoon a siesta.

Now that is because I have had years to handle my insomnia symptoms; think through insomnia remedies. I believe that most insomnia treatment comes from a thinking self. It is too easy to go from pill to pill. From time to time I take melatonin – that works for a couple of months and then…..
Everyone is stuck on traditional sleep times. So us insomnia sufferers need to think out of the box.

Different age groups suffer differently. Teens are short on experience, and struggling to handle what they think is teenage insomnia, as apart from temporary sleep disorders.
Step one – organize your time. Get routine in your life. Let mind and body sync. That cuts down the confusion. Refuse to get stressed from 2 hours before bedtime: read if you like, pretend to study by reading up on classwork if you can.
Try to get from under the headlights. By any insomnia definition you do not have insomnia: just teenage stress.

How should i deal with insomnia?

I have insomnia. Its almost like I fight going and staying asleep, even though I’m exhausted. I will be almost asleep, and the I start getting agitated until I have to get up and take a shower, or read, or watch tv. Then it starts all over again and before I know it, its 3am and I have to get up at 5am.

Insomnia sucks. Is there anything that truly makes you want to sleep!?! Ambien, lunesta, drugs do not work!?

I rarely ever sleep anymore. If I do I have horrid dreams. I would love to have just one night of sleep that lasts over 5 hours with no dreams!
I live alone, and no I have no significant other to sleep with. That probably would help but that isn’t a solution at the moment.

Chosen Answer:

sleep with someone you love , or someone you feels secure with. It helps!

Is there a way to get rid of insomnia induced from Dexedrine?

I’m 16, and I have ADD so I have been taking dexedrine for two weeks now. I just switched from 10 mg to 15 mg every morning, and I absolutely cannot sleep at night. Is there a way to cure this drug-induced insomnia without not taking the drug? How harmful is insomnia to my body? I have been awake for more than 60+ hours now.

Thanks in advance!

Chosen Answer:

to help you sleep, warm up some milk and put some honey in it. it relaxes your body so its easier to fall asleep.
insomnia drains your body of useful energy.

Can taking high doses of ibuprofen cause insomnia?

I’ve started taking 6 ibuprofen pills a day (as prescribed by my doctor) and have started having massive insomnia issues ever since. I googled it and found out that long-term use of ibuprofen could cause insomnia, but I’ve only been taking them for less than a week. Could this be related anyway?

Chosen Answer:

Ibuprofen is just a COX blocker. COX doesn’t really have any play in sleep. I am trying to make connections with prostaglandins and stuff further down the line after COX that might stop you from relaxing but I can’t come up with anything. So, to answer your question: I don’t see any conceptual link to insomnia with ibuprofen.

I`ve been taking Lunesta for sometime now and my doctor wants me to try Lorazapam instead.?

My question is are both these drugs the same? Do they have the same effect as I take Lunesta for panic attacks at night. Lunesta has a nice calming effect unlike other medication I have tried like Trazadone. If not are there other medications the work the same as Lunesta and have the same effects as it can be very costly.

Chosen Answer:

Lunesta is a hypnotic. Ativan is a benzo. Lunesta is not particularly addictive. Ativan can be highly. Ambian CR is Lunesta’s counterpart.

If your doc is talking about a switch to minimize Lunesta’s effects wearing off, Ativan might make some sense although it is not a long lasting medication. If it is simply to change meds, I’d seriously question why the move.

Don’t you think it’s funny that they advertise medication like “Lunesta” just to get a normal night’s sleep?

That’s like saying you won’t ever get a normal night’s sleep unless you drug yourself up with medication.

Healthy people have been sleeping like normal for millions of years and they’ve never needed medication for it, so doesn’t this just make you laugh and sort of shake your head disgust at the same time?

Chosen Answer:

um, not really. there are people out there who really suffer from insomnia and sometimes need medication to help them sleep. not everyone is “healthy” by your definition. that doesnt even make sense…yes “healthy” people can sleep normally, because theyre healthy. that has nothing to do with the fact that “unhealthy” people (people with insomnia in this case) cant do that all the time. if you had insomnia you would probably want medication to help you sleep too so u can have a normal life. and millions of years ago people didnt have nearly have or do the same things we have/do today…so that statement is not valid. im sure if u ask anyone with a legitimate sleeping problem this question they will laugh in your face
