Solved: won't remember folder view settings!
using windows xp home edition on laptop - refuses to remember folder views, although repeatedly I have unchecked and rechecked the box in folder options that says "remember each folders view settings" in an attempt to "reboot" that feature, but my folders keep reverting back to a standard view setting. I keep resetting the folder view the way I want it and it continually refuses to retain it, very frustrating! Any advice appreciated.

There is a folder view setting size limit on XP. I think it's something like 400. It's supposed to discard the oldest settings, so that it always remembers the most recent 400. In some cases, however, it just stops remembering new settings when the number of settings hits 400.

To increase the view size limit to 8000, try this registry tweak.

Save the .reg file to the desktop. Double-click it to merge it to the registry.

Restart the computer.

If the fix only opens as a text file, right-click it and select Open With > Choose Program... Then, select the Registry Editor.

If the Registry Editor is not in the list, browse to C:\WINDOWS and select regedit.

I'll come back in a couple days and mark this "solved"... just to be sure...

Smile Washer Registry Streams
I was having this very problem, but discovered that my Webroot Window Washer setup included a wash of registry streams. Once I had unchecked that option, XP remembered my folder views once again.

I'd been through the usual shenanigans (TweakUI, BAG size etc) but this seems to be the solution if you have a similar usage deleter program.
