Why don't Desktop folders remember their 'View'?

My annoyance appears to be related; spacing and location of Desktop items is remembered, but the contents of all my Desktop folders are often being changed from 'Icon' view to 'List' view. It appears to happen at random, some nights never but others a number of times. I installed XP lean and mean. I use the 'Classic' look desktop, all programmes are accessed from the Desktop via a Shortcut or folder. I have nothing in 'Start', 'Programs', etc. I'll arrange programmes etc within each Desktop folder to be in 'Icon' view, and without telling XP otherwise (wittingly) the next time I might open any desktop folder they are all displayed in 'List' view. I feel it might be 'Explorer' related as I access it via a Desktop Shortcut and my view within Explorer is 'List'. I cannot find any preference setting within XP where I can tell it that I want a 'List' view within Explorer but an 'Icon' view for my Desktop folders. I am aware I am able to apply either to everything. Apologies if I have missed something simple, I did not encounter this one with '98' and a couple of nights at MS's site shed no light ... and I'm starting to get really pissed off having to rearrange the furniture most times I fire up this box. Regards, Chris Upton.

This problem has been discussed in Annoyances before. A solution can be found HERE. This problem drove me crazy for a while until I used the registry tweak found in that thread.

Make sure the folders on the desktop are shortcuts and they will remember the Icon mode. Move your folders off the desktop to the C-Drive and create a shortcut to the desktop.

For this same problem, I tried: - Deleting the two BAG registry key(s) - Adding MRUSize registry key(s) - Various sequences of settings & reboots - Updating to SP1 none of which worked. What finally worked was starting Explorer with ~any command-line options besides "/e". For example, EXPLORER /e,c:\ starts Explorer with the usual "/e" view, but now the folder settings stick. Who knows why. Info on folder settings is at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307856 but no explanation on why any of them should make a difference on folder settings. I think it's just a bug in XP. Hope this helps. ____________

I'm not sure if you found a solution but I was just reading something and i think I could solve your problem I know it was long ago but......Open Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>View TAB>scroll down to the bottom of the list>6th from bottom is "Remember each folder's view settings" check that box then>"Apply to All Folders" if you figured it out already great if not the pleasure is all mine lol ;)

Remember each folder's settings is the FIRST thing I tried... I'm going to try the "EXPLORER /e,c:\" command line and see if that works... I had to do something very similar in the past for win2k... Cheers! Monsoon

Making folders Remember their 'View'

With regard to remembering each folder's view settings in windows explorer:

In my case, I've noticed that the problem (in my case) is also related to the specific
way you use to open windows explorer, i.e. which shortcut you used. If for example
I use the "My Computer" shortcut or the "Windows Explorer shortcut" (on the Programs>Accessories
menu) in its original state, i.e. NOT MODIFIED in any way, or "windows key + E" on
my keyboard, my windows explorer seems to be working correctly with regards to remembering
each folder's view. However, if you modify the windows explorer shortcut to open
to a specific path, e.g. by setting the Target of the shorcut to the following:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e

which is used to open explorer to your C drive in stead of your My Documents folder,
then it won't remember each folder's view settings. In fact, the only way you can
change a folder's view permanently IN THAT SPECIFIC INSTANCE OF WINDOWS EXPLORER
which was started with the modified shortcut, is to use the use the "apply to all
folders" button in the "folder options" in which case of course it affects and changes
all your folders views.

Thus, IN MY CASE, modified shorcuts seems to be the problem. I have not verified
this over a long period of time and maybe windows explorer will stil sometimes forget
a folder's view.

One way to maybe fix this, is instead use: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,c:\

This seems to do the trick. I got it from "http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/r1075925998"

Regarding the problem with folders in XP remembering their settings, I struggled with this since I got XP in April 2003. No fix worked. Then I downloaded SP2 and all of a sudden the folders were exactly as I wanted them! I didn't have to do a thing...it just happened.

OK, I had the same annoyance but found a solution, hopefully it works for all of you too. I made a shortcut on the desktop and pointed it to /windows/explorer.exe. After its created, right click choose properties and fill in the following: Target: C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /e,c:\ Start in: <--make this line blank Not sure if adding the /e,c:\ is really necessary but try it. Then click ok to finish and double click to open. Now setup the way u want your view to look and click Tools, Folder Options, View and uncheck the box "remember each folders view settings" followed by Apply to All Folders button, and click ok. That should do it.. if still getting problems then, after unchecking remember view settings click ok so explorer erases any previous things and setup your view the way u want, click apply to all folders and thats should do it (hopefully) otherwise play around with it.. good luck!
