Illiana Toll Road

Governor Mitch Daniels now proposes to study building and privatizing a toll road to bypass the Indiana Toll Road he privatized just last year.    This proposed privatized toll road would be about 63 miles long and run from I-94 near Michigan City to I-57 in Illinois.  About 50 miles would be inside Indiana.  The proposal is targeting truck traffic in particular, according to INDOT's official Illiana Toll Road home page.

Mitch's Indiana Toll Road Agreement

Gee, wonder how Cintra-Macquarie will feel about this new proposal by Mitch Daniels?  Wonder what interpretation their attorneys will put on the terms of the State's contract with them that says if other road upgrades or any action by the state reduces the income from the toll road, the state must pay compensation to the operator?

Will Hoosier taxpayers be paying Peter AND paying Paul?

Looking Forward

At this point, an agreement has been signed by Governor Daniels that a study will be conducted jointly by the states of Indiana and Illinois.  The price tag for the study is reported between $5 and $10 million.

Senator Tom Wyss (R-Fort Wayne) introduced a bill (SB 1) to switch the Governor's authorization to toll and privatize New Terrain I-69 onto his proposed Indy ByPass Toll Road and the Illiana Toll Road.  This bill passed out of  the Senate and now awaits action in the House.

On March 24, 2007, Governor Daniels pulled his support for the section of Illiana Toll Road east of I-65 and reiterated his support of the western section.
