Problems related to the sound card of your computer are easy to solve. You do not need the services of a computer repairman to get it fixed since you can do it yourself in few easy steps. Of course, before you can deduce that the problem is indeed emanating from your sound card, you need to check your computer first. The problem might be caused by a software utility, a faulty wire or loosed connections and not by a damaged sound card. Imagine the hassle of having changed the overall sound card assembly of your computer only to find out that you are not hearing any sound because the your speaker’s connection to your computer is simply loose. The point is, make sure that the problem is the sound card and not anything else.
Diagnosing the Problem
It is wise if you check all the physical connections of your computer. Re-attach wires to make sure that there are no loose connections. Restart your computer after you make the changes and see if anything changed. Believe it or not, many people have already mistaken muted speakers as a sound card problem. It is not naive if you go ahead and check your settings just to be extra sure. Sometimes, the problems that you encounter might be software-related. In order to find out if it is indeed the problem, simply do the following:
- Go to your Control Panel. You can find your control panel in the right portion of the “Start menu”.
- Find the “System” icon in the Control Panel folder; hit “S” if you have trouble finding it.
- Next, you need to click on the “Hardware” tab and hit on the “Device Manager” where you will find the option “Sound and Game Controllers”.
- Take-note that if you are using the Windows 7 OS, the “Sounds” icon can be easily found in the Control Panel Folder.
If the problem is software-related, you will definitely get a warning message once you open this option. You will be given several options as to how you want the problem to be fixed. But, in most cases, the best way to solve the problem is to simply uninstall the sound drivers and re-install them again. This procedure will fix the software problems that your sound card is experiencing. You can download these drivers directly from the internet or you can use the CD bundled with your sound card if you have managed to keep it.
Other Problems
In some cases, the “Add New Hardware” option will not work in making your computer recognize your sound card. Unfortunately, when you are in such a situation, the best that you can do is to simply buy a new sound card, a better one perhaps. This usually happens when you buy low quality sound cards. Nevertheless, you have to realize that sound cards are not really expensive computer components. If you are going to buy one, better buy a high-quality one or else you will only be spending money on something that may not work. In the end, your expenses might double up because you will need to buy a new one after your first item becomes useless.
