Recovery is the latest album Eminem has released so far and it became the best sold album of 2010, which speaks to the importance Eminem still holds in modern music. The album started off as Relapse 2, as an intended sequel to his previous album. However, as the recording went along, he realized that he didn’t want to do the sequel and that it would be better to come out with a brand new album, called Recovery. He even states at one point that the previous album was not that good. Once again, we got Marshall Mathers rapping, not Slim Shady who populated the most of Relapse.
What we got is a more introverted and subtler album which shows us a mature side of Eminem. However, he wouldn’t be Eminem if everything could be summed up in a few lines. Because of this, Recovery can sometimes seem like an imbalanced album with songs of varying quality. Still, it is an album with much force and with songs that sound like something off of 8 Mile soundtrack, full of pure hunger for performing and spitting lines.
The critics received the album well and most of them stated that he is still on top of his game and that he knows to work words like no one at the moment. Some of them had issues with some of the songs being crammed onto the album without too much need and with some of them not being up to the quality everyone expected from this album. Still, no one could deny the apparent quality of the lyrics and Eminem’s delivery that seems to be getting better with each album. Some of the critics also complimented the restraint which showed that he can work with lower speeds than top ones.
When it comes to sales, Recovery broke a few records, most notably becoming the first album that sold over 1 million digital copies. IN only six months since its release, Recovery sold in more than 5.7 million copies worldwide and became the best selling album in the United States in 2010. All in all, it is more than a worthy installment in Eminem’s discography and it has also earned him a Grammy for the Best Rap Album.
Everyone is looking forward to his next release and there have been articles online, most notably in Rolling Stone which speculate about what direction Em is going to go next. We are looking forward to anything that might be.
