Diet Pills People who continuously wage war against fat often look for that wonder pill that will effectively aid their weight loss at the soonest possible time. But how do these pills find their way into the weight watchers consciousness? Annually, around 17.2 million Americans purchase diet pills to help them lose weight. The use of drugs to facilitate weight loss, burn more fat or minimize obesity has been the Holy Grail of many weight watchers. A lot of people who go on a diet would rather take diet pills than go on an exercise regimen coupled with a healthy and balanced diet. During the 50s and the 60s, diet pills were commonly associated with amphetamine derivatives or speed. Addiction to the drug meant that doctors were forced to stop prescribing these types of weight loss pills. Proper diet and exercise took over temporarily. Then in 1973, the Food and Drug Administration gave approval to a new weight loss drug called fenfluramine with trade name Pondimin. In the year 1996, a new drug called dexfenfluramine (trade name Redux) was introduced. Some doctors prescribed phentermine, another weight loss pill together with fenfluramine that results in a combination drug called dexfenfluramine or dex-fen-phen. How do these drugs work? These diet pills work by increasing the level of serotonin in the brain. This is a chemical or a neurotransmitter linked with improved satiety appetite and mood. Fen-phen increased this action twice, tricking the brain into believing that the stomach was full and also increased the person rate of metabolism. These pills indeed caused weight loss but in 1997, following reports of heart valve diseases, the manufacturers of both fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine withdrew these diet pills from the market. They no longer gave prescriptions for Redux, Pondimin or Fen-phen. The medication drug called Sibutramine with trade name Meridia is the latest weight loss drug in the market. Other diet pills are still being developed while some are waiting for FDA approval. Before taking the diet pills available in the market, it is important to first consult a doctor for proper prescription.
