Looks like AirPush. I refuse to use any app that uses AirPush for serving ads.

But it is so obvious when Air Push is activated. And the developer makes it so easy to opt out of Air Push notifications.

But if it is the case - I hope AdFree makes it possible to block Airpush - fuckit.

/me writes the AdFree developer

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AdFree modifies the hosts file, which would allow it to block any call to any server. It's just a matter of figuring out the ip of the server AirPush is using and adding it to the list. That doesn't mean the notification wouldn't show up. Depending on how AirPush is implemented, you could wind up with a notification that's just an error message, kinda how the ads in some apps still draw an empty box.

Either way, AirPush is just a terrible idea and I hope it dies very, very soon.

[–]Kalium 1

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Hosts hacks usually rely on knowing the domain name to block, rather than the IP.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You're right of course. The hosts file maps domain names to ip addresses. To block a domain you just add an entry resolving the domain to localhost. Sorry I typed faster than I was thinking. Thanks for the clarification.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's likely that Airpush uses C2DM, which comes through Google servers.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

AirPush sucks and is for devs too lazy to properly integrate regular ads.

[–]Gonzopolis 0

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Integrating AdMob seems to be just as easy form what I have seen. One entry in the manifest file with the id, one entry in the layout file and some AdMob source files to include in the package.

Implementing an own banner as an alternative seems to be working well too. Just add the image to the resources of the package and link directly to the market url of the app you are advertising.

Not blockable via hosts file.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Devs generally don't use it because they're lazy, they use it because it's an order of magnitude more profitable than in-app advertising.

Looks like touchwiz to me. To do this requires heavy modifications in the framework (I believe) so it can't be simply done with an application. One of the couple things Samsung got right with touchwiz. Autocomplete contact numbers was another.

Or you could just use Widgetsoid and set it to be in your notification tray.

It does that? I've been using it all this time as a widget, wishing there was a way for it to go to the notification tray... D'oh!

But, how do you do that? EDIT: Thanks for the explanation.

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

When you create a new widget with it go to the advance tab and select "Notification" and "Invisible". That will make it show up in the notification pull down and it will not be shown on the home screen. You might need to adjust the color of the icons and the indicator bar to make it easier to see. Depends on your phones setup.

a lot of roms and/or apps have integrated music controls for lock screens.

It's a pretty standard feature in custom ROMs, but most apps do it by forcing their own widget before the lockscreen shows up, similar to how WidgetLocker works, rather than integrating directly into the stock lockscreen.

Also the long-press to change brightness on the notification bar is awesome. CyanogenMod got the notification bar power widgets, I'm hoping for the brightness changer too but it's not as necessary with brightness in the notification popup. Also the CyanogenMod one is scrollable and customizable which is just awesome.

To be honest, I actually kind of like Touchwiz as a UI layer, but not on the software/code level because of how it holds back Samsung phone development.

NO DEVs SHOULD USE AIR PUSH!

I still don't get this attitude. I'm not big on status bar ads. I probably wouldn't install an app that used them. I'm not OK with demanding developers bow to my desires though; let the market decide.

If people want to agree to let a developer tattoo ads on their foreheads what business is it of mine? I'm not saying Air Push is the answer, but some apps by their nature aren't conducive to in-app ads.

[–]EtherGnatVerizon Galaxy Nexus 0

Yes, if somebody tries to sell something (or even give it away in this case) and nobody buys it it dies. That's the way it should work.

The way some people are talking it sounds like they feel they should never have the option to try and sell it in the first place, which IMHO is bad.

Sometimes things shouldn't be produced even if it would be popular and sustained by a market. Right?

[–]EtherGnatVerizon Galaxy Nexus 0

Why?

Somethings are immoral even if popular. It is right, for example, to outlaw the selling of a good or service to whites only. In an economy where racial discrimination is the norm (edit: and even where there are pockets of racial discrimination) there will be no disadvantage to a business in being discriminatory.

Another example is safety in the workplace. A business can do better if it ignores safety in the workplace. Their costs are lowered if they spend less on safety. A free (consumer) market puts a pressure on business to lower their cost. Most consumers don't care how a good or service is made.

[–]EtherGnatVerizon Galaxy Nexus 1

That's like asking what any app gives you that plain old browser doesn't. Why would you need a reddit app if you can browse reddit in a plain old browser, how about facebook, or twitter? Why need an app store at all, surely all that customization can be built into a phone natively?

In this case it's even more so, MiKandi has porn games, the normal flash porn games don't work well on small touch screen devices, but when someone takes the time to build them specifically for android devices the games are playable.

Any app I download will be instantly uninstalled. I'm sure enough one stars in the market with a comment along the lines of "STUPID NOTIFICATION ADS. UNINSTALLED!" will force them to stop this shit.

Why are people getting downvoted for expressing their opinion? Sure I find airpush stupid and annoying and will uninstall an app the second it does this to me, but it seems to me that in this thread people are getting downvoted to oblivion merely for expressing a contrary opinion and saying what they would and wouldnt mind. That doesnt seem like the Reddit I know.
