Talking Tutorial: 12X Star Trek Phaser Mod!

Also, check out my new 1000 Lumen XM-L T6 Maglite Modification kit! Awesome!

This modification is done using the Playmates brand, 1994 Classic Star Trek Phaser... (stock #6118)

I think you will enjoy this tutorial of my 12X Blu-ray Star Trek Phaser Modification!

12X Blu-Ray Star Trek Phaser video! - Click here!

And another...

12X Beam Video (with smoke) Igniting flash paper and popping more balloons! - Click here!

This first post is a 'picture tutorial' of how the wiring is done for this build using a 3 volt supply, and a FlexDrive. Many other details shown too...

Important: Most of the people here at LPF already understand the potential eye hazards involved with something like this. But for those who are new to lasers, this modification can damage the eye instantly with a direct shot or reflection. Proper eye protection for 405nm wave length is recommended. And extreme caution needed when using. I would recommend storing it in a lockable case so that it cannot be accessed by just any person or child...

Eye Protection: (405nm)
ARG - Blu Ray, Argon, Blue, KTP [NR-ARG-EN207] - $80.50

Be sure to check out my custom EzFocus adapter shown in this tutorial!

I have parts available in this FS thread - Click here!

1.5 Amp 445 build:

Shown in the July, 2011 issue of Popular Science Magazine...
Popular Science Phaser Article...

I have done testing with running 2 X IMR 14500 Li-Ion's in parallel and it works great for a V5 FlexDrive set at 1.5 Amps...

It requires a few modifications:

* Re-wiring it for parallel
* Slight modification to the battery compartment
* Driver heatsink installed
* Installing voltage regulators for the sound board and the 3 volt LED 'armed' indicator LED. (7833 voltage regulators - 3.3 volts)
* Also, with this mod, the sound board is turned on with the safety switch, as well as the laser...

It is wired so that the voltage to the FlexDrive, is direct from the batteries. (4.2 volts at full charge)

* 2 X IMR 14500 in parallel = 1200mAh's capacity

I've also got an extra LED inside. So that blue light is illuminated out of the top of the vent plate when you activate the trigger...

'Hot' option available here:
FS: Star Trek Phaser 'Hot' Option! Or, Individual Parts...

12X Phaser Build - Key Features:

* Room for a nice size heatsink.
* Safety switch with LED. (sound will operate when the laser is NOT armed, and also when the laser IS armed)
* Custom 'cone tipped' EzFocus adapter.
* Using the stock trigger button from the phaser!
* FlexDrive: http://hacylon.case.edu/ebay/laser_d..._FlexDrive.php

The diode is from a Pioneer BDR-205 blu-ray burner. I am running this 12X blu-ray build at 320mA's for good longevity. (hopefully)

Here are the pictures and details...

The heatsink is the exact same design and fit, as my Green Star Trek Phaser mod. The only difference is the set screw location. This heatsink is for an AixiZ module. My 'cone tipped' EzFocus adapter is measured for a flush fit AixiZ module using my 405-G-1 glass lens mod and this heatsink design...

Trigger:

I used a momentary button switch so I could use the stock trigger button. This gives it kind of a 'hair trigger'. (but I like it) So that's why I decided to put a safety switch on this one...

Safety switch mounting:

Wiring and Circuitry

Current draw:

* Sound board - 120mA's
* LED - 15mA's
* 12X diode (FlexDrive set at 320mA's - 3 volts supply) - 710mA's

Total - 845mA's - New Energizer e2 lithium primaries.

I should get about 2 1/2 to 3 hours run time...

Note: I have done testing with running 2 X 14500 Li-Ion's in parallel and it can be done easily with a slight modification to the battery compartment, and re-wiring it for parallel...

The one thing that I found, is that if doing so, it's better to regulate the voltage going to the sound board and the 3 volt LED 'armed' indicator LED using a 7833 voltage regulator. (3.3 volts)

But lithium primaries are fine without any voltage regulators for a 445 build using 2 X e2 lithium AA's in series if you are ok with 650mA's. (it may be able to be set higher than that, but I know for sure 650mA's is good)

That's still a class 4 laser!

The e2 lithium batteries in series, actually have more capacity that 2 X 14500's in parallel...

* 2 X IMR 14500 in parallel = 1200mAh's capacity
* 2 X e2 lithium primaries in series = about 3000mAh's capacity

Output power:

465mW's using my 405-G-1 glass lens modification.

Note: It's best to disconnect the two gray wires going to the stock bulb 'dimmer' as shown...

I had a very high current draw when testing one of the 'Hot' option kits. I found that the problem was related to this 'bulb dimmer'. After I disconnected it, everything was fine...

EzFocus adapter, and details of the nose modification and fit: (parts available!)

Note: You must be careful when threading your lens into the AixiZ module using the EzFocus adapter. There could be a possibility to ‘cross thread’ the lens. (because the nose cap and the heatsink need to be aligned) I recommend using silicone glue on one side of your heatsink, and threading the lens and EzFocus adapter in place while it dries. This will set the heatsink in the perfectly aligned position inside the phaser…

Assembly tip: When installing, screw the nose cap only half way on, then start the threads on your EzFocus/lens assembly. Then screw the cap the rest of the way on, and so forth...

Hope you enjoyed this project!

Nice project, Jayrob, with the 12X in there you will actually be able to set laser to "stun", definitely burn.

Great job.

Thanks Jerry!

I really like the safety switch and LED too...

In fact, I ordered some blue and green LED's just to have on hand. (3 volt/3mm)

I plan on putting a green LED with a safety switch in my Green Star Trek Phaser mod now...

Well...

It's only got two sound selections on it, but if you just pull the trigger and then let go, I guess that's the same effect as a pulse.

I'll see about getting 3 or 4 balloons lined up for some obliteration video...

LOL just Star Trek weapons, on the modding field ? ..... i always wondered to modify something different, like as example the Visitors guns, but i have basically the same problem of Jerry (too few time and too much things to fit in it )

Anyway, i think that your mod is a great well done work, my congratulations

I wonder if the barrel pivot is automatic. I doubt it but it can be done

I see the barrel pivot is spring loaded. maybe a solenoid mod can be made to it for the other direction.

For sure not a kids toy anymore! (man toy)

I keep them in a case. The case has a combo lock too if I wanted to lock it...

Yep... I'm going to get a nice video showing the sounds and the safety switch. As well as the custom EzFocus adapter.

I'll get some balloon pops too... Edit: Video added!

Uhm ...... about this ......

Do you know that this is a provocation, for the DIY maniac part of me ? .....

i think it depend from how much space you have at the top of the rotating part, but i think it can be done auto-turning with a cheap servo from DX (5$, if i recall correctly), modified, and one of those lever microswitches 2PST (a deviator, two positions, long lever, possibly soft to move)

Something like this, maybe .....

Two pins on the finned part take care about the switch that stop the movement, shifting it when the rotation is at the right point, and the other switch set the position, and need to be put somewhere on the body (maybe a slider switch or one of the computer mini-clicky switches, near where the thumb is when you hold the phaser, so it can be acted without use two hands) ..... the servo, if i recall correctly, have usually 180 degrees of movement, so it's enough for rotate it completely without require extra gears ..... just take away the electronic board from it and use it "as is", directly connected to the motor ..... and if it roll in the opposite direction, just swap the wires :P (and adding a 100nF capacitor in parallel of it, can prevent disturbs to the rest of the electronic too)

Oh, btw, they usually works from 3 to 6 V, so if the phaser use a 9V battery, maybe better put a resistor in serie ..... if uses a pair of AA cells, 3V are enough, just a bit more slow

Great job Jay sick phaser !!!

I was looking for the old style phaser at toysrus and they didn't have anymore so not wanting to go home empty handed I purchased 2 of the new movie phasers. I like the stun/kill feature you twist it manually and it locks in place then when you press the button it spins back. I made red/blu-ray both sides phr-803t and a loc. I also made a green one but it was only
10mWs , I sold the pair. I think i'll have to do it again but this time keep them and move on up to a 12x diode

Nice HIMNL9

I was thinking a solenoid and cable for speed. Finding one with enough travel and strength to rotate it as it is. Then use a single pole switch like you illustrate with your double pole.

I see what I'm up against when It gets here. If the original spring is to heavy or I can't find the right solenoid with the travel I need, I will definitely move toward doing something more like your illustration.

Thanks,

Ryan
