I recently formatted and reinstalled windows xp sp1a and all my software. My problem is when I put in my dvd-ram disc, it says the media is invalid and it must be formatted and I am unable to read it. Before I formatted the drive showed up as DVD-RAM in explorer and I was able to read and write to my dvd-ram disc. However now I can't because explorer thinks its a CD-ROM drive, even though device manager knows its a dvd-ram drive. Is there a certain aspi file I need to setup my dvd-ram drive correctly. I fixed this problem a while ago but I cannot remember how to do it.
Any ideas?
Thanks

1.Disable windows cd burning service. Uninstall the drive in device manager, reboot and let it redetect.
2.Then try Nero's Registry and General Clean Tool. I have fixed almost all problems of this type with or w/o Nero installed (including a DVD-ram identity crisis). A very handy tool
3.Try Nero's InCD Reader v4. At the very least, install Nero's Aspi layer. (Disregard if you use EasyCDCreator)
4.If you like Alcohol 120% d/l a trial of it and make an image of the disk.
I have solved many frustrating media problems w/ Alcohol 120%..
Hope it helps!

3. Now got to HARDWARE tab
4. Click on DVD WRITER (here its amazing but you will see it that its not REPLACED by CD-ROM) and click "PROPERTIES"
5. In the new window go to PROPERTIES tab

Some MS Info -
CD-Rom Drive Not Reading UDF
DVD-RW disks appear to be empty
Newer (and presumably better) Nero InCD tools are here.
Don't use the Roxio DirectCD stuff - fails.
You may have to upgrade your XP SP1a to SP2/SP3 to get it "fixed" (presumably SP3, which includes "hotfix" mentioned in second link).

Some very good info (plus some helpful links) -

You probably had some UDF software installed before your reinstall. I use Nero so can't say with certainty whether applying SP3 alone will help.
P.S. The link to the Nero site is for both the Reader and the full InCD (both now FREE).
