Question

Error message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" while performing SFC scan.

As suggested, I tried to run scannow to repair Windows Vista.  I did that, but the scan only ran until 76%, then I received the message:  Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."  How can I complete the scan and repair my Windows Vista

Hi rdoran,

Are you performing the steps from the administrator account?

To determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps:

Step 1:

NOTE: When SFC runs, it logs it's actions to the C:\WINDOWS\LOGS\CBS\CBS.LOG. You can find the specific SFC entries by searching for the [SR] tags in the log.

For how,to see only the SFC scan details in the CBS.LOG:

        * Open a elevated command prompt.

        * In the elevated command prompt, type findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt and press Enter.

        * Close the elevated command prompt.

        * Click on the sfcdetails.txt file that was just placed on your desktop to see the SFC scan details (ones with the [SR] tags) in the CBS.LOG.

        * You can safely delete the sfcdetails.txt file afterwards if you like.

Reply back with the details in the log file.

If that does not help to complete the scan, you could perform the below steps and check.

Are you able to boot into safe mode ?

Step 2:

Refer the following Microsoft article for more information on how to log in to safe mode:

If you're able to boot into safe mode, you may perform a System File Checker (SFC) scan.

Refer:

How to use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833

Step 3:

Additionally, you may log in to command prompt and check drive for errors and check if that makes things any simpler.

In the command prompt, type the following command and hit Enter:

chkdsk /r

Note: If any bad sectors are found while running the check disk utility and if attempt recovery of bad sectors is checked while checking the drive for errors, the data in the bad sector may be lost while attempting to recover bad sectors.

I am trying to run this in order for me to be able to run Disk Defragmenter, I went through the following thread and tried what other people from Microsoft support suggested

What is happening to my laptop is that from all of the sudden it freezes a lot and is really slow, the last thing I did was play music in the night until the battery run out, and then it took half an hour for it to boot, I did the Startup Repair thing (which took like 2 hours) and now it takes 5 minutes to boot (before it was just half a minute), but still performance has slowed down and games I play normally like Counter-Strike and League of Legends can't start.

I have tried all this on Safe Mode, since in Normal mode it freezes a lot and i get frustrated trying to make things work; should I try all this in Normal mode still?

Please help!

Had this issue long time ago ... After clean installation that problem (and much others) were solved ;-) Even I know it is (or could be) a real pain to do a clean installation but it is worth the time. Just compare how long you take/took to solve this single problem compared how much time you need for a clean installation (this is also a good point to over-think the backup strategy)

Should  I try restoring first? Also my laptop didn't come with any CDs at all; do I need to buy a new CD copy of Windows? I don't have a Windows 7 Home Premium Installation CD

Update: Right now I'm running CHKDSK, and is taking a very long time at stage 4, getting stuck with a file (sector or whatever) and fixing it after 15 mins, on some others 30, 45 mins and its the 8th time now; but anyway after this is done I will try any ideas I can come up with until I can find a Windows 7 CD or this gets fixed (by the way, when I just bought the laptop, it would totally freeze when playing music after 30 mins, just that alone and sometimes when playing a game too, which I guess it could've hurt the disk but that problem stopped after I got a cooling stand); there must be a fix so this can be solved and doesn't happen again =S

Any suggestions or comments are appreciated! Thanks hfrmobile!

The cause of the problem can be manifold.

First of all you should go to Control Panel --> System and Maintenance --> System

I assume that you have a legal copy of windows. So you should see the genuine symbol. At the bottom, at Windows activation you'll see the Product ID / Product Key. Write down that key and store it on a save place.

Maybe you try "HD Tune", a free utility which scans the HDD and finds bad sectors and marks them as bad so that the OS will stop using it. If important system files are stored in such bad sectors you should try a system restore. If that fails a clean installation may be an alternative (you can download the contents for a Windows CD and using the Product Key mentioned above). Using the clean installation you should select "full format" so that bad sectors will be excluded at the very beginning (save your data/work before on a USB stick or something similar!)

Good luck.

What do you mean by manifold?
Well I bought this laptop online and it came with Windows pre-installed so I guess its genuine.. but that product key wouldn't work since it has already been activated? Please explain a little bit further that to me :)

Well CHKDSK is still going on; does HD Tune work on safe mode? Normal mode boots up but after loading all start up processes it freezes

Update: Now it has stuck for over an hour on one file but the CPU light tells me it's still working, should I just turn the laptop off and try HD Tune?

Update: Ok CHKDSK moved on, but, is it worth the wait? It's still at 11% and I think it would be faster if I download the Windows CD, burn it, and install it; I think doing all that would be faster than waiting for CHKDSK.
If I do a clean install or format and install Windows, would this problem reappear (remember my 1st post)?
