Windows 7: Revert Alt+Tab back to the Old XP Style

In Windows 7, when you press Alt+Tab to switch between applications, the Alt+Tab window displays thumbnails of each program. However, many users prefer the traditional program icons like in Windows XP. This step-by-step guide describes how to bring customize the Alt+Tab window back to XP appearance.

This is the default Alt+Tab window in Windows 7:

And this is what you you get after following this post:

1. Press Winkey + R to bring up the Run box.

2. Type Regedit and hit OK to access Registry Editor.

3. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

4. Right click on the right pane, choose New->DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name your new key: AltTabSettings

5. Double click on AltTabSettings and change its value to 1. Hit OK.

6. You can close Registry Editor now. It should take effect immediately. But it is not, try to log off or restart your computer to make it works.

    Save a file called whateveryouwant.reg with the following content and double blick it afterwards, and you`ll be good! :)

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer]“AltTabSettings”=dword:00000001
