HDCP error, Windows Vista 64-bit system
Mar 4, 2010 at 4:17:39 PM  |  #1
Attached is my playback advisor file. I can get to menu system, but once I attempt to open a program to watch I receive this error:

"Video's audio is protected and requires an audio driver w/HDCP support; changing the audio output to analog might allow audio playback."

Need help in getting this running. Would love to watch my recorded programs on my computer while I workout on exercise equip in same room.

My fairly new PC runs Windows Vista 64-bit (kept up-to-date), quad 9500 Phenom AMD processors, with 8 GB of memory.

Let me know if you can help me get this running. Seems pretty much everyone is having difficulties about some kind of protected area issue. Appreciate any help you can provide --Ken

If you run the playback advisor, click save log to your desktop, open the file, edit select all and copy, you can then paste the file to your reply. Here is my system as an example. I am unable to open the file you posted.

Apparently, you didn't note that I attached the file you requested to that forum request. However, I will do as you specifically ask and insert the text of that file below. Please let me know what you find out. Thanks, Ken

I am getting the same error message but only on HD content I record. Programs that I que with Video on Demand for later playback, work just fine. I have a fairly new PC with Vista Ultimate 64.

Here is my Log Submission:

Problem resolved.

All I had to do was disable digital playback and make analog default. Even though I don't use it was still enabled and causing the playback error.

Ken, Yes, I saw the attachment to your first post but for whatever reason I was not able to open the file. In any event, try this. Set any song to play so that you can hear audio. On the lower right of your computer screen on the task bar, right click the speaker icon and select "playback devices". Whichever device that is set to default will likely have some digital connotation. Find a different one that will play the music without any digital and set that as default. On my system for example, I use "Realtek High Definition Audio". Let us know if that fixes your issue.

I use a bose system on my computer. I selected a different one to disable, of the 4 only 2 were able ot be disabled. I don't remember the name because I just assumed it would unhighlight it instead of making it disappear.

When I did that and opened the Directv2pc, it started playing, but both sound and picture now constantly skip.

After reviewing other shows listed on my DirecTV stored shows/movies listing, they appear to play correctly, both picture and sound. Perhaps that one TV show had issues when it taped and that might be what I was seeing.

I'll keep you posted if the issue persists beyond that one show, however.

Well, after playing with it further, most movies/shows either start out skipping, and then stop skipping for awhile then skip again, others start out okay, but if I move the movie/show forward or backword, it may start skipping at that point. If I move it a little bit, the skipping will stop, at least for awhile.

So, still seems like I have some kind of issue that is keeping me from enjoying this program as fully as I'd like. I'd really like to watch shows I've recorded in Directv on my computer so I can watch as I workout (equip in same room as computer).

Appreciate your ongoing assistance. Thanks, Ken

buckken,
I don't really read in your thread whether your network configuration is ethernet hard-wired, wireless or Powerline Adapters. It is pretty well accepted that the DirecTV2PC(especially for HD content) just won't "perform well" over wireless(purportedly, due to the way that wireless technology sends data in "bursts" with pauses in between). I'm not real sure about DirecTV with Powerline, but I think it's "better" than wireless. Just an FYI in case you are using a wireless router.

My Direct DV-R unit is connected to the home network router via direct wire connection. You are correct, however in that my PC is wireless to that same network router. I need that for working with various computers, printers, etc. in the house. Its a good point (one I had considered), but I guess if it boils down to this being the issue, I likely will keep the wireless and not use the directv2pc program. It would be a shame to have to make that choice.

I really appreciate your pointing that out, thanks.

I'm hoping that directv will continue to revise the program and allow its proper use. --Ken

Well, unfortunately the streaming of HD video is what it is(VERY demanding on the PC's memory, processor and graphics card; the video equipment involved in the streaming; and the network technology and throughput) and nothing that DirecTV(actually a company called Cyberlink wrote the DirecTV2PC application software) can do at the application level will change the way that wireless routers send data in short bursts with pauses.:0(
Only wireless technology itself changing will help and with the proliferation of HD video streaming over computer networks and the Internet, the wireless router companies may consider an overall design change that would facilitate HD video streaming.

Ken, If you want to test, temporarily disable your laptop's wireless and connect a patch cable to your router. I'd gueee you'll find the hard wired connection provides stable playback. The nature of the way wireless sends info in bursts often makes it unsuitable for streaming full definition media. In this day of "wireless" everything, many users don't want to hear that and the idea of a wired connection seems old fashioned.

Unfortunately, the issue is my computer is a desktop PC and NOT a laptop, so it is not something that can be easily moved, such as a laptop.
