Are Korean Prostitutes Racist?

I've been asked this question several times... Are Korean prostitutes racist against "westerners" or other non-Koreans? This is not including the so-called "foreigner-friendly" ones like in Itaewon or Texas Street in Busan. Many people have experienced racism from the prostitutes when they visit such red lights as the one in Suwon by the train station, or the 588 in Seoul near the Cheongnyangni station, or any other red light area or sexual massage parlor (안마) in the suburbs or other major cities throughout Korea that are not frequented by foreigners regularly.
The short answer is yes, but with reason. So you ask, why exactly is it that the girls who stand behind the windows and sliding glass doors ignore me when I approach them, but they are more than happy to invite a Korean man inside? That's racism! Answer: They are like this for several reasons. One reason is that Korea is generally a homogeneous country so they fear what they are not familiar with and think of foreigners as being tainted in some way. The Korean men believe that foreigners bring AIDS and other STD's over to Korea and they don't want to share their women with them. So if a Korean man is browsing the strip for a hooker and he sees a westerner come out of the shop, he will not go to that girl, and he will even tell his Korean friends not to go to her.
Another reason for the racism from Koreans is that many foreigners and tourists treat Korea like a "playground" so-to-speak. Particularly, Canadian English teachers on an E-2 teaching visa - They get drunk and belligerent with the attitude of "what happens in Korea stays in Korea" and as a result they give all other foreigners a bad reputation. Its the same reason that many restaurants, night clubs, or karaoke bars in Korea will not serve foreigners or even allow them inside. They are uncomfortable around you because you're an outsider and not one of them. And it's very likely that some other foreigner before you was so unruly that they annoyed the other customers, got asked to leave by the bouncers, and threw a drunken temper tantrum on their way out. So don't be surprised that they won't serve you in many of the popular places. Very sad, for many reasons.
So because of, 1) a fear of the unknown, 2) a rather ignorant point of view on STD's, and 3) some poorly behaved drunken English teachers, it is no wonder that the prostitutes will ignore a foreigner who approaches their window. After all, its their business and livelihood so they need to maintain a "clean" reputation with the regular repeat costumers (Korean men). After all, they were raised in a secluded country so they naturally act accordingly.

Don't loose hope yet!!!... In some of these red light districts are dark alleys that branch off the main streets which are foreigner-friendly! The dark alleys are a little bit creepier and the girls are not as attractive as the ones on the main street but its still safe and OK. The Korean men will not go near those girls for obvious reasons - they accept people of ALL races so they think they are dirty. Not true though. They are just as clean and are tested for diseases regularly just like all the girls. It's actually very sad how they have it segregated this way. Its a pathetic mentality, but that's Korea for you. It's just how they are.
----------
As a side note, one should also keep in mind that Korean people are generally very inwardly focused. They consider themselves "first blood" so anyone who is not pure Korean is not as good as them. They look down on you, and as mentioned earlier, they do not allow outsiders into their elite circle. Of course they will pretend to be friendly on the surface so don't bother asking about it. They will deny their prejudices to "save face" but its true. (Maybe I'll write a blog later just on "saving face" because its a very interesting topic to discuss) I just thought I'd add that as another example of Koreans being narrow-minded and self centered people. And it further explains why the prostitutes act the way they do.

Melbourne’s Brothels are some of the most famous brothels in the world. There are over 90 brothels in Melbourne, all of them listed here, in the Melbourne Brothels Guide conveniently sorted by suburb. Melbourne is a city where prostitution is regulated by placing certain requirements on brothel owners and escort agencies.

There is a brothel in Melbourne,s sunshine area. It is called " hot gossip". The girls there are extremly racist and predijucial. they are mostly Asians and australians. You go there these women think you got stds. Some times they will take your money, but will not want to do wat u paid ur money for.
if you live in melbourne or Australia don't ever go there. It is a highly, highly unrecommendable place

Oh give me a break pal. Don't take your frustrations out on Canadians. Typical "Where #1" attitude and asinine comments like this are the reason for rampant and world wide Anti-Americanism. Why do you think the Canadians where their maple leaf so visibly? Its because they don't want to be seen as, or treated like and American

Oh wow, sorry for the spelling errors. Whoops

Great job here. I really enjoyed what you had to say. Keep going because you definitely bring a new voice to this subject. Not many people would say what you’ve said and still make it interesting. Well, at least I’m interested. Cant wait to see more of this from you.

In response to comment posted by mr.b, I am not taking my frustrations out on anyone. I am not frustrated at all nor do I have a typical "we're #1" attitude. I am just writing the truth. As I mentioned in my first post, sometimes the truth hurts.
Let me clarify... Though there are westerners from both Canada and the US (and some other countries) teaching in Korea, the majority of English teachers on E-2 Visas are in fact from Canada. I don't know why this is, but its true. Of course there are people from the US, and other places who also behave very poorly while traveling (which is why you like to wear your maple leaf) More power to you. But when talking about ESL teachers in Korea, it is simply a fact that most of them are Canadian.
I considered writing a post just about this topic, but it is not the main idea of this blog. It is not my intention to offend anyone. Thank you for your input.
