1.8 is out!

09-15-11

Hey guys! 1.8 is out and it looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun.

I’ll keep everyone informed about the status of updates to Bukkit. It will likely take a few days for everything to settle down. Till then, I’ll copy our world and start a new one so people can enjoy.

September Update

09-11-11

Hey everyone!

So it looks like the adventure update is just around the corner! This is a good time to make new changes to the server.

We may switch over to an adventure mode once I’ve played it and figured out if I like it at all. It’s possible I’ll even run a second server on top of the other.

As for the original, I have decided what to do about the messed up spawn point. I will be moving in as soon as I finish writing this post.

I’d added a few new moderators to the server as well, so make sure you’re on your best behavior!

August Update

08-19-11

Hey everyone! It’s been awhile. Hope everyone has been avoiding the horrible summer heat this year.

I’ve just returned from my summer vacation recently and begun checking the server nightly again. Everyone seems to have done a good job building things, and I’m only noticing a tiny bit of griefing. It appears that WorldGuard has most certainly done its job.

The area around the current spawn point is becoming untenable for new players due to honeycombing. Because of this, I’ll be moving the spawn point in the coming days to a new location that will allow people a fresh start. It’s likely I’ll move the spawn point to the urban enclosure we’ve built near the giant duck and statue. MAKE SURE TO WORLDGUARD YOUR STUFF! I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH. If we have new players coming in to the city zone it is inevitable that we will get griefers.

Additionally, I’m likely to begin importing new schematics into the gameworld in various places. If you find a really cool place, try exploring it before  tearing it down. You might find something interesting….

Griefing Report

07-02-11

Evidently we’ve had some more griefing on the server. The player responsible has been banned.

The only parts affected were the subway lines and a few random blocks where they shouldn’t be. All in all not a super big deal.

This incident demonstrates the effectiveness of WorldGuard when used religiously. The griefer was simply unable to do any major damage because most of the city was protected.

Please make sure you’re using WorldGuard on all your important stuff! I can’t emphasize this enough!

The server will not be reset, as the damage was only to the subway line. Nothing about 20 mins of rebuilding won’t fix.

Well, it looks like overnight the Bukkit people updated. So this makes the previous post irrelevant!

The server is now compatible with 1.7.2. Happy building!

Hey guys! I’ve been so busy with work the last few days I haven’t checked up on the server or the Minecraft homepage. I had no idea 1.7 was even out!

I’ll look into updating the server immediately. I can’t promise that everything will work 100% out of the box, but that’s the problem with using Add-Ons in Minecraft!

This weekend might be interesting.

Edit: Like I thought, Bukkit hasn’t updated to a new configuration for 1.7. I have two choices:

1. Update the server to a vanilla Minecraft with a new untouched map and just let people dick around on it until we get a new Bukkit release. The old map will be saved and no harm will come to it.

2. Let the server stand like it is and people can downgrade to play.

Please vote in the comments section! I’ll give everyone until tonight to make a decision!

Thanks to everyone who’s been working hard the past few days on getting the city up and running!

Since everything is going so well, I’ve decided to let everyone who has special powers keep them at least until Sunday.

Go build awesome stuff!

Since we’ve been having issues with griefers and people breaking people’s stuff and making them irritated, I’m going to put up a post about how to use WorldGuard.

WorldGuard is the server’s region protection system. It can be used to set up blocks of space where no one but the region owner can build or break blocks. This makes it perfect for deterring griefers because they literally can’t do anything.

Here is a link to a basic tutorial regarding WorldGuard. Pay very close attention to the instructions about how to use the selection system.

Here is how to claim a region and use the region system.

http://wiki.sk89q.com/wiki/WorldGuard/Regions

NORMAL PLAYERS MAY ONLY USE THE /region claim COMMAND! They cannot add, delete, redefine, or do anything else to regions.

WorldEdit Selection Tutorial

IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT YOU DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE OTHER COMMANDS DISCUSSED IN THE WORLDEDIT TUTORIALS. WORLDGUARD AND WORLDEDIT ARE NOT THE SAME THING. The two mods work together, but one provides the Admin with tools to do maintenance and the other provides everything with the tools to protect their stuff.

Here are more tutorials that should clear up any lingering questions

The permission system has been updated to address the problem of being unable to build in the nether. I didn’t expect people to reach it so soon so I hadn’t set it up yet. Happy hell trekking!

For some reason I had given people access to the /sethome command but not the /home command, making the command sort of useless.

The permissions system has been updated to fix this problem.

Thanks to seansna for pointing out the mistake!
