It is heartening that Wikileaks has returned to its founding principle of courageous full disclosure of the cables, with more unfettered disclosure to come in the future. It should be as contagious as urged.

Wikileaks is escaping the trap-hole dug for it by its venal partners who whispered the allure of insider rigging.

The first five Wikileaks media partners are self-promotionally venal to issue a statement of condemnation about the release for it presumes they have acted in the best interests of the public without the evidence now available to the public to decide for itself what to learn, ponder and judge about the US Government and other governments. Mediation of this disclosure is not needed in a democracy.

The Wikileaks release of the unredacted and re-formatted cables will help compare the Wikileaks reconfigured version (60GB) with the original files (1.7GB) -- if both packages contain the same cables. These differing sizes of the package indicate considerable reconfiguration padding.

Still, for authentication of the cables, the original version is essential, presuming that the original is indeed the version provided to Wikileaks. And that there was no tampering with the package from its source to Wikileaks. Wikileaks and its media partners, now about 100, have admitted to tampering with the cables under various justifications, all of them self-serving. This is suspect and cannot be trusted, as indicated by the manifold versions that have been selectively published.

Editorialization, redacting and reformatting, like bowdlerization, translation and grammatical/syntactical "improvement," are notoriously unreliable due to inaccuracy creep caused by misunderstanding, prejudice and ignorance.

That the unreconfigured cables have become public is to be applauded and not condemned.

2 September 2011. David Leigh on Twitter, and the Guardian yesterday, have suggested that there are two versions of the "z.gpg" file which contains "cables.csv" and/or, possibly, other material. Leigh has tweeted that the file he accessed was named differently than "z.gpg" and that the version released by Wikileaks in December 2010 may not be the same as that seen by Leigh. A suggestion has been made that the two files (and perhaps other versions) were deliberately made the same size to cloak the differing contents. Leigh has not responded to a Cryptome tweet for more comment on how the files differ.

Cryptome downloaded, decrypted and unzipped two cases of "z.gpg" from the torrent and mirror site below. The encrypted, zipped and unzipped files are the same size and date, but the contents have not been compared. There may be other versions of the file which were provided at various times to other parties.

Embedding unique concealed markers in verions of a file which appear to be the same as other versions is a method of tracking the versions. Hashes used to verify authenticity can be faked to mislead. Easily spotted embedded markers can be supplemented with those harder to discover.

Less suspiciously, files can be erroneously copied, revised for harmless purposes, edited for a particular distribution, and such. File history of changes can be deleted or modified to conceal the changes, even false histories substituted. These are commonplaces in forgeries as well as in cases where an author wishes to hide file manipulation.

Forensics can reveal many of these techniques but not all. Forensic specialists are often sources for more effective techniques for deception and false authentication. Digital material is exceedingly difficult to authenticate due the ease with which it can be used to deceive by seemingly "unbreakable" protection, always an exaggeration.
