Early Reports Suggest Kinect Having "Rough Start" in Japan
Kinect selling "one-fourth" of Move's sales at one retail chain.
Microsoft's Kinect launched in Japan just three days ago, but a merchandiser at a major retailer revealed today (via Hachimaki) that the accessory is "off to a pretty rough start."
Taketo Matsuo is a merchandiser for Tsutaya, a Japanese retail chain that sells books, CDs, movies and games. In his weekly retail forecast for the Mainichi Shimbun, he described Kinect as "targeting light [video game] users" but said that most buyers were "existing [Xbox 360] owners" rather than newcomers. He estimated that Kinect was selling "one-fourth" the units that PlayStation Move (which launched one month ago) was selling.
This is only one man's perspective based on sales activity at one chain of stores, so it is hardly a definitive take on the national reception of Kinect in Japan. However, with no separate listing for accessories in the weekly Media Create rankings, it's the only public third-party assessment of Kinect sales we're likely to get for some time.
Further proving his point, there were no Kinect launch titles among Tsutaya's top-selling games last week. Matsuo said the biggest hit was Call of Duty Black Ops (PS3) which was selling "1.5 times" what Modern Warfare 2 sold last year. Last week's subtitled release will be followed by a Japanese-dubbed release in December, so Matsuo expects it to "attract a wide variety of users."

At least the Japaneese aren't that stupid to buy a kinect.

But they're even more gullible of buying into the Move instead.

I have a question.

Is my neutral/uncaring opinion towards both Kinect and Move a popular opinion among 20-something gamers or am I in the vast minority here? To my eyes Move is literally nothing that hasn't been around for years on the Wii. And from the handfull of reviews I've seen, maybe around 25% of Kinect games actually function and respond the way they were intended to. Nobody bought either HD system because they wanted gimmicky family games, the type of people who would spend money on that probably bought a Wii years ago and wouldn't care enough to spend hundreds more just for better graphics.
Who knows, maybe Kinect will get its kinks ironed out and maybe Sony will think of some trick with a motion controller Nintendo never thought of. But for now I'm amazed either of them is selling well here, let alone in Japan.

I fell for the Wii,

I'm not falling for it again with the others, especially something that segments the user base.

It was going to be a slow start

The low install base for the Xbox 360 meant that people would not be buying Kinect immediately. As it has been noted as well, the size of most Japanese apartments is restrictive for the hardware. Kinect sales could improve if word of mouth is positive, but it will have to bring in a new audience that has the space to use the hardware to be successful.

Japan hates American products, give it up Microsoft!!!

Give it up Microsoft! Japan are proud people and are proud of their own products! Trying to sell the Xbox 360 and Kinect to Japanese gamers is like trying to sell a Ford car to a Japanese citizen. Why would someone in Japan buy a poor quality American car when they could buy a Honda or Mazda that's made in their own country?
Well... it's the same thing! Same mentality! I have Japanese friends and when they see "Made in USA", they treat it the same way as when we see stuff that says "Made in Taiwan"! What does "Made in Taiwan" mean to Americans? It means that the product you are buying is cheap and will break. Japan sees the same with "Made in USA" and the fact that the Xbox 360 has a huge reputation of getting RROD problems ever since launch, that is NOT HELPING IT WHATSOEVER!!!-
Your right

American cars suck. Lets buy Toyota's.........oh, wait.
I do agree on the proud part. Japan is known for being pretty xenophobic, but I don't think their avoiding buying foreign stuff cause of quality, they just prefer domestic crap.

In a country where space is limited, how on earth is something that requires a lot of living room space gonna be popular?

Exactly...

I have a friend who moved to Japan for work reasons, and he was joking that the apartment was the size of the closet he had in his apartment in the US.
I have a decent size entertainment room and I won't be rearranging it just to use this thing. I may buy one when the price drops to hack it, though. The stuff that some people are doing with it (connected to a PC) is more interesting than the games I've seen for it, so far.

Have to disagree with you there. To me it is technologically superior to anything on sony and nintendo's console. I bet you only own a ps3 don't you? Thought so!

well this should be expected

People need to remember that the 360 is less popular in Japan, and then add in the fact that a lot of Japanese housing in major cities are small apartments. Cant really expect it to sell, the statistics i want to see is the percent of users that are buying kinect.
